Anger can be defined in a multitude of ways, as well as seen in a variety of different perspectives. Anger can most commonly be defined as a feeling of tension and hostility that may have been caused by anxiety due to unwanted actions from someone or something that is received to be offensive, threatening, or against one’s beliefs. (1) Witnessing this emotion typically leads to an emotional reaction that can be seen as extreme rage, displeasure, and hostility. This is caused because when one is angry, you instantly feel the urge to retaliate back. It is very commonly believed that anger has emerged from people that we do not commonly associate ourselves with a person on a personal level. When one is angry, problems regarding ones physical and mental health may come into play. Although it has these negative attributes, it is not something that one can avoid. Angry is a natural emotion that everyone feels. Learning to control your anger is a very important factor that helps to distinguish between good anger and bad anger. In multiple studies, it has been shown that anger has the ability to increase the risks of one having a heart attack. In a study at Harvard Medical School, students came to the conclusion that people who dealt with being angrier, were 3 times more likely to suffer from a heart attack than those that are able to control their anger in a more positive way. (5) Often times you hear people refer to being so angry that their blood is boiling. This is not just a phrase, being so angry does have the ability to allow your blood boil. When researching the psychology behind anger, you often hear about the ‘fight or flight response’. This is the reaction that occurs in response to an event that was seen as harmful, an attack, or a threat to one’s survival. (6) This helps to show the way that people choose to negatively react when dealing with anger. When one is so angry, the anger that is being built up has the ability to lead to increased adrenaline and cortisol. This is extremely important to the health of humans because it is what pumps our heart rate. This can lead to increased blood pressure, which leads to your blood vessels being constricted. (5) It is shown in multiple ways that anger affects your health in a multitude of ways. Another way anger can strongly affect your health is mentally. Anger can strongly impair your judgement.
