During the Ensemble Unit in our JV Theatre class, everyone learned how to become a better team member. Through exercises such as the qualifier game, ball game, and tic-tac-toe, we learned to work together and play however would best benefit the whole team. These lessons will help us become better actors because we have learned to trust each other, but also to be someone that the whole class can rely on when in need. We will work together and for each other until we succeed. In the beginning of the Ensemble Unit, our class was only a team in that we shared the same goal, which was to complete whatever exercise we were given. Straightaway the class split into two groups: the leaders and the (silent) followers. To demonstrate my point, I walked into the first day of JV Theatre convinced that I would end up being a great leader in the class. Now, I am incredibly far from that, and I believe I’m in a better role than I ever imagined. During the qualifiers exercise and tic-tac-toe game I started to truly discover my place in the team. Instead of instructing my friends what to do, I searched for ways to win. I came up with strategies during the qualifiers game that would limit our chances of being given a strike. I contributed ideas and logic, rather than just bossing everyone around. Likewise, during tic-tac-toe I would be prepared to play strategically and fast. I thought quickly and played accordingly. Now the unit is over and I believe I’ve found my place in the team: I’m the brain-stormer. On this Fall I was taking Theater class with a great professor. His name is Kendrick Jones and he is from Detroit. The professor was so kind with the student and helpful because he wanted us to learn about Theater. He wanted us to learn at least 1 thing about Theater from his class. Also, he let the class to be fun by doing some activities because he doesn’t want the students to get bored in his class. By doing some activates and meet with our groups during the class will help the students to communicate with each other. Also, that will help them to improve their skills and to share the ideas and come up with something new for the audience. It’s gives the class a different taste when the instructor let the students meet with their groups and let them work together. For me I always want to come to theater class not just because the attendance points, but I wanted to learn some things that I don’t know. Thank god I learned some things by attending this class everyday, and I took 200 out of 200 on the attendance grade.
The Great Depression of the 1930s put many Americans out of work and left people searching for hope. After his election, Roosevelt's New Deal programs began to help better the lives of many jobless people. Unfortunately, many of these programs never reached their ultimate goals, and some failed without anything having been accomplished. The Federal Theatre Project (FTP) was one of many programs that could not fulfill what it had intended. The FTP was short-lived and plagued by severe censorship, all while being a major target of the House Committee to Investigate Un American Activities (HUAC).
I realized that I really enjoy teamwork and dedication. I found that by putting other’s needs first, success can be found in a different sense. As I think back to this activity, I probably would have made the same mistakes as the squares if I had been in their position. It is easy to fall into a negative and defensive territory when blessed with power and privilege. Overall, I enjoyed StarPower. It taught me so much about power, teamwork, and privilege and how each can be used positively or negatively. I hope this experience will have me make better choices in the
Theatre-In-Education The theatre education industry/movement has seen some rapid changes since its initial developments and establishment in the 1960’s. However its origins mainly lie in the early years of the last century. It was the initial establishment of companies such as Bertha Waddell’s in Scotland and Esme Church’s in the north of England that thoroughly established the main roots of TIE.
Theatre serves to reflect society. From Shakespeare to Sophocles, a playwright’s work illustrates the different mechanics within a culture or time period or society. Theatre offers viewers the experience of taking a step back and looking in on themselves. In this way, theatre is a mirror for the world and the way it functions.
In this paper, I will be focusing briefly on my knowledge and understanding of the concept of Applied theatre and one of its theatre form, which is Theatre in Education. The term Applied Theatre is a broad range of dramatic activity carried out by a crowd of diverse bodies and groups.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. After a review of my performance in the assigned group, I have learned a great deal about myself and behavior in the team-setting situation. This is not the first experience in a team setting. Previous team setting experiences were conducted in sporting and recreational environments rather than academics. While the setting and the environments were indeed different, there were many commonalities and correlations between the team settings I previously experienced and the current academic team-setting experience for this academic course project. One of the traits that I had exhibited pertained to being co-operative.
Theatre will always survive in our changing society. It provides us with a mirror of the society within which we live, and where conflicts we experience are acted out on stage before us. It provides us with characters with which we identify with. The audience observes the emotions and actions as they happen and share the experience with the characters in real time.
All the team members were well aware of their individual roles and their team’s role. As our team was multi-cultural, some arguments were already expected. GROUP STAGES Our group is composed of six students which were made in the first week itself, with a few additions and subtractions in the next week. By the second week our group was formed and proceeded to a second stage known as Storming (Tuckman, 1965).
Before I started Introduction to Theatre class, I had been only to a couple of plays in my life. Just in this semester I’ve been to about ten plays and have learned so much about the art of theatre. The information I retained from class will help out a lot in the future, but the most important part of this class was the shadowing experience of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With being able to get an inside look at this play during rehearsal and then going to see the performance was an incredible experience. By going to the rehearsal and then seeing the show, I was able to learn and understand more on how the theatre works. From there, I could understand the long process the actors and directors have to go through before the opening show happens.
Historically, drama, and indeed all areas of the arts, have been seen to make an unimportant contribution to society as a whole. As recently as the mid to late 20th century, the arts were seen as a luxury, and a purely leisure exercise or hobby, with only gifted children having access to classically defined art forms such as music or art. This ideology still exists in some form today, although the arts are beginning to be recognised as an integral part of our everyday and working lives. Many drama practitioners and educators consider the arts to be a growing power within the economy, and that drama has benefits to society, culture, and a person’s inner development. These benefits have shaped the incorporation and delivery of drama within Queensland schools. This essay will examine how, by teachers delivering a rich aesthetic experience to students through drama in schools, students are provided with opportunities to develop self identity and equipping them with a skill set that is transferable across a variety of learning areas.
My experience watching a live theatre performance on stage was a fascinating one, most especially since it was my first time. I attended a staged performance of “The History Boys” in a small theatre called “The Little Theatre of Alexandria” at 8:00 pm on Wednesday June 8, 2016 in Alexandria, Virginia. The overall production of the play was a resounding experience for me particularly the performance of the actors and the design of the scene made the play seem real.
