What I Knew/ What I Wanted to Know Many of you have probably had the experience standing in the middle of a aisle of a grocery store, pondering whether you should spend the extra money on the organically grown produce because of all of its “nutritional benefits”, or if you should just get the cheaper stuff that’s really just the same thing. Before researching, I don’t really know anything about organically grown food besides the fact that it is probably healthier, but is a lot more expensive than conventional produce, also that it does not have pesticides or GMOs is it. Organic crops are treated too, some with copper that can cause poisoning to the workers (Smith, 2015). So as you can see, some organic crops are also treated with hard chemicals, and these chemicals may even be worse. Pesticides might seem scary, but they are really not an issue, as organic and non-organic diets both resulted in very miniscule traces of pesticides, and insecticide in homes might be causing more of these traces than food (Francis, 2015). Organic and non-organic diets both have result in very small amounts of pesticides in the body. “Those who are concerned about pesticide consumption should focus instead on produce grown in North America where levels tend to be lower” (Francis, 2015). So instead of focusing on buying only organic produce, maybe try to support our local farmers, where pesticide levels are down. Although organic may be more “Whole” or “Pure”, the chemicals and methods that are used on conventionally grown food is very safe. In fact, humans have been genetically modifying food for a long time, and now we know that there are many safe methods of doing this (Chien, 2016).
