All modern societies have a set of rules that govern human rights and freedoms to ensure that basic human rights are not being violated. Being part of a free society means having the ability to make our own choices within the confines of the law. Our freedom comes with restraints, its is an agreement between individuals and society, a formal agreement called the law or the legal system, In society we live in democracies that are increasingly hostel to the collective freedom. For example, the freedom to have clean are requires restrictions of the freedom for the factory owners to produce cheep goods by not having to clean up the pollution generated as a by-product (Bill C-30). Freedom of speech is the corner stone of a civil society, in a civil society our rights include standing up for free speech, standing up to others free speech, the right to stand up against each other, and the right to protest their government. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Act 1982).
