What does engagement mean to you?
Engagement is everything! Engagement is the interaction and participation with we have with our peers, leadership, and agents. It is being involved in not only development but also in building relationships and trust. It is doing what we can to put a smile on someone’s face, especially after a rough day or call. Engagement is caring about our job, providing feedback to better the process, and enjoying the work we do. This includes capturing the attention of agents in creative ways, which allows them to feel that they are important to us. Aon Hewitt (2014) defines engagement as the psychological state and behavioral outcomes that lead to better performance. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice illuminates a social courtship between the proud Mister Fitzwilliam Darcy and the shrewd, unconventional Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth is proud of her own identity. She astutely justifies herself as “a gentleman’s daughter” (Austen 337) in her confrontation with the prejudiced and class-conscious Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Mister Fitzwilliam Darcy, who shares Elizabeth’s sharp tongue, comes from a family of high social status; his privileged upbringing instilled in him “pride and conceit” (Austen 349) that blinds him from acknowledging the similarity and equality between him and Elizabeth. Upon first proposing to Elizabeth, he does not realize that he is not raising her social status by marrying her. They are of equal authority in marriage; their similar personalities makes them all the more equal and complementary to each other. Thus, their marriage, following a second, sincerely worded proposal, signifies Darcy’s recognition of Elizabeth’s worth, and through his recognition, Austen argues for the fundamental equality between husband and wife.
One of the biggest challenges I have observed is clients, showing up for scheduled sessions. Many of the cases I am assigned are optional. Therefore, engagement is difficult to achieve. I will be attending an in-home therapy session with my clinical supervisor and will assist in developing a treatment plan based on his needs and wants. Engagement will occur together when we work with him with this process. Engagement involves establishing a relationship with the client essential for beginning the change process. The needs of the client are identified and included in the assessment process.
Effective engagement is effective when active listening takes place as well because sometimes people (myself included) can listen to a person talk for hours but not really hear them. Discussion Board Part A- Parent Engagement In my opinion parent engagement is when a parent is engaged and active in their child’s life. An engaged parent would engage in discussion with the child, ask questions and develop a strong relationship with both the child and in terms of education, their educators. An engaged parent would keep in contact with their child’s educators, ask questions, be involved with school projects and work with both their child and their child’s educator. This is different from my understanding of a parent who is just involved.
Civic engagement is the backbone of many organizations. It brings people together working for the same cause of the organization. “Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to make that difference” (What Is Civic Engagement?, n.d.). When people gather together because of an organization, a bond is made with the other members. Friendships are made so with others so being part of an organization does not feel like it is work. Along with the friendships made, many minds work toward the betterment of that organization.

Engagement with your client can often determine the impact the sessions will have on a client/ Developing a strong rapport with clients increase their comfort and help them be more willing to open up to the social worker.
