On that day he picked up Algernon like normal but got bit. Charlie watched afterward for some time and saw that he was disturbed and vicious. Burt tells me that Algernon is changing. He is less cooperative, he refuses to run the maze any more, and he hasn't been eating. Burt and others have to feed Algernon because he refuses to do the shifting lock. One of the challenges Charlie experiences when living with his disabilities, is he struggles to understand. In this part of the novel, Charlie is being debated if they should use him, but he fails to recognize many words they are saying. Professor Nemur says, "The frist of your new breed of intelek** coudnt get the word*** superman. Before the operation, he exhibited some clear strengths such as determination, a positive attitude, friendly with people and some weaknesses such as education and inability to understand the adult world. After the operation, he begun to change in numerous ways. Charlie started out as being not really intelligent. Being around with “smart” people made him want to change and became “intelligent” just like his “friends.” I think its all crazy. If you can get smart when your sleeping why do people go to school. That thing I don't think will work. I use to watch the late show and the late late show on TV all the time and it never made me smart (Keyes 118). This part of the book led Charlie’s flashbacks takes place of how he was raised or nurtured through his childhood, Of how he wanted to try to become smart. However Dr. Strauss believes that his sleep would help Charlie be able to learn. However in his nature, his disability cannot help him at all, doesn’t matter how much he tries to watch TV and tries to go to sleep, I wouldn’t allow him to learn anything at all. The nurture of this is having the doctor recommend Charlie to do this. His disability also not just affects him but his family as well. His disability kind of makes his sister miserable as well, jealous over how the parents focus on Charlie due to his disability, despite the successes the sister achieves in school. Charlie begins to learn how society treats the mentally retarded. He realizes his old friends at the bakery just made fun of him. After watching the audience laugh at video of him before the operation, Charlie runs away from a mental health conference with Algernon after learning that his operation went wrong. Charlie does research on himself and learns that intelligence without the ability to give and receive affection leads to mental and moral breakdown. “ Patrick says this about Charlie” (during the Homecoming Weekend party), he contrasts the "perks" of being a wallflower with the negative aspects, which are seen when Charlie have difficulty talking to others and observing rather than participating. For Charlie, Ignorance is bliss. He realizes that his so called ? friends? were just using him to entertain their perverse humor. Also, he was also fired from the job that he loved so much because his new intelligence made those around him feel inferior and scared.
First, Charlie in the beginning of the novel is very similar to the beginning of the Allegory. Charlie, like the prisoners, thinks that’s life and that’s all it has to offer. Which, for that part of the story, is true. In the beginning, Charlie is mentally disabled, so there isn’t really much he can do.
A major scene in the novel, the convention, was where Charlie discovered the truth behind Nemur and Strauss’s scheme. When Nemur took the podium, he said, “It might be said that Charlie Gordon did not really exist before this experiment” (Keyes 161). Nemur truly believes that he invented Charlie, and that he saved him from a life of misery, or better yet, no life at all. This, of course, discouraged and angered Charlie, causing him to write, “I’m a human being, a person--with parents and memories and a history--and I was before you ever wheeled me into that operating room” (Keyes 161). The surgery did more than what had been established. On top of an advancement in his intelligence, Charlie realized that what he had gone through, and the work he had done, had gotten him nowhere. He was Charlie before the operation. The real Charlie. Charlie was able to form relationships before the operation, and functioned positively in society, but he would end up throwing this all away. He wanted to form stronger relationships, but his mental illness prevented anyone from doing so, due to the fact that they saw no point. After the surgery, Charlie is aware of his mental illness, and becomes angry about his process, which prevents him from forming the relationships he had wished for. Along with the convention, Charlie’s surgery shows much unethicality in the bakery, where he was fired from his job. Charlie’s boss/employer told Charlie on May 20, “But something happened to you, and I don’t understand what it means. Not only me. Everyone has been talking about it. I've had them in here a dozen times in the past few weeks. They’re all upset. Charlie, I got to let you go” (Keyes 104). In this novel, Flowers for Algernon, written by Daniel Keyes, a man named Charlie Gordon has an operation done to increase his intelligence. He started as a mentally retarded man and slowly became a genius. He seemed to soak up information like a sponge and he was able to figure out the most complex scientific formulas. The only problem with the operation is that it does not last for ever and in his remaining time he tries to figure out why it is not permanent. He will eventually lose everything he learned and become worse off than when he started, so Charlie was better off before he had the operation.
Was Charlie better off without the operation? Through Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes sends an crucial message to society that man should never tamper with human intelligence or else the outcome can be personally devastating. After Charlie's operation, he felt isolated and lonesome, change in personality made him edgy around people or (lack social skills), and suffered from traumas due to past memories.
