In the Time of Butterflies, A Latin American masterpiece, we read the story of 4 sisters (Minerva, Dede, Maria and Patria) in a time of dictatorship by Rafeal Trujillo. The story portrays the struggles the sisters go through as they are ordered to be killed for their resistant against their leader who they find to actually be a killer. Throughout the book we see multiple themes presented such as Family, Religion, feminity and violence.

Throughout this story we see the importance of family especially. Each sister is very different and because of this it helps them connect to one another. Dede is very rational in her decisions, Minerva is radical or idealistic, Patria is very religious and Mate is a romantic. The setting in the novel is the Dominican Republic. This region is still a dangerous area but during president Trujillo's reign of terror it was an incredibly violent time. People like the sisters who would try to oppose him were often executed for this action against him, ""People who opened their big mouths didn't live very long," Sinita said. "Like my uncles I told you about. Then, two more uncles, and then my father." Sinita began crying again. "Then this summer, they killed my brother."(Alvarez). President Trujillo would kill entire families for opposing him. Violence is not just prevalent with the president in this novel, we see this through Minerva's father striking her, to her father using violence to control her mother. Throughout this novel violence through force is a persistent theme. This violence connects to many current date violence in Latin American countries. This hasn’t just been a trend in Dominican Republic with dictators. This has been a common theme around many countries in Latin America.
