Rome’s most famous landmark, Colosseum is a large Amphitheatre that could hold up to 50,000 people seated, which is located in Rome, Italy. The Colosseum was used as a royal treat, entertainment where gladiators would fight with wild beast in front of people, animal hunt, theatre performances and public executions for public entertainment and also the King himself. Most of the public event was held at Colosseum. The Roman Colosseum was built between 69 to 79 CE by the Vespasian emperor.

Though today these games seem inhumane and unnecessary, to their ancient culture it was a vacation from everyday stress. Even the Emperor was said to understand that though money and grain would satisfy and individual, large spectacles were necessary for the contentment of the masses' (wes civ).

This amphitheater was to act as an entertainment hub where people would watch all kinds of games and sports. It was the Roman Empire’s central stage for gladiatorial combats and the wild beast hunts. It was ultimately meant to distract and socially control the public. In this paper, many aspects of this great amphitheater will be discussed. Some of items include historical/cultural aspects, aesthetic philosophy, period genres, stylistic traits and technical terms, biographical information and specific compositions. These aspects will be separated into 6 parts and thoroughly discussed.
Over the course of 668 years, gladiatorial fights were a significant part of some Roman’s lifestyle in Ancient Rome; there were many important gladiators that made a huge impact, such as Spartacus, who led the slave revolt in 73 B.C.E.. The specific nature and influence of gladiatorial contests in Ancient Rome, including those of the Colosseum, will be discussed and analyzed as well as their impact on the Ancient World. The purpose of this paper is to provide details about certain aspects of gladiatorial combat. After gaining an understanding of the games and how they started, where they occurred, and the response to them, it will go into more depth to describe how these events and people have affected the Ancient World. The fights started in 264 B.C.E. to commemorate the death of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, and this was the start of what would become a major form of Roman entertainment. What started as a kind of religious ceremony slowly evolved into a way to entertain citizens and to help candidates for political positions to gain favor by holding the games, since people enjoyed them. The construction of the Colosseum greatly assisted in providing gladiators a place to hold their fights and to allow many more spectators to view them. Spartacus demonstrated how not everyone in ancient Rome agreed with the concept of gladiator fights and provided an opposing view rather than that of the majority of Roman citizens. These specific topics, the Colosseum, Spartacus, and the first fight, will be considered and evaluated in the following paper.

The two ancient civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome were the best of the best during their time periods. Ancient Greece began around 2000 B.C. by the inhabitants known as the Mycenaean’s, followed by the Minoans. The Minoans built the foundation of Greece. The Roman Empire was founded around 753 B.C. by the two twins, Romulus and Remus. Romulus ended up killing Remus and built the city of Rome on one of seven rolling hills. Architecture was very important to both civilizations and they were always trying to out due the other. The architectural style of the Ancient Greeks and Romans was overall constructed and used differently.
The Architecture of the Colosseum is very grand, with the capacity to hold up to 80,000 people. The Colosseum is over 160 feet tall, it “has a length of 620 feet and was close to 513 feet wide” (“Colosseum Architecture.”). Because the Colosseum was so big, it would have been very difficult to get so many people in and out of it had it not been for the various arches and stairs built within it. In total there are about 80 arches that each led to various stairways. These stairways then led to all the different levels of the Colosseum, which in turn made it a lot easier and more comfortable for a lot of people to exit it in a short amount of time. The Colosseum also had many arches of which four were “reserved exclusively for royalty and nobles” and the others were for the rest of the people (“Colosseum Architecture.”). Unlike other amphitheaters which had a circular shape, the Colosseum had the unique shape of an oval, which helped the people watching have a better view of the arena.
