July 30, 2017 A Comparison and Contrast of Two Famous Educators: Piaget and Vygotsky Introduction Of the developmental theories, developmental psychology is highly regarded as are two of its geniuses Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. Their contributions are considered deeply and monumentally impactful in developmental and educational psychology. Piaget theorized that learning and knowledge were based on a constructivist ideology. The seventh and final of Lourenco’s similarities between the two icons is how they position qualitative changes over quantitative changes. Both men believed that transformational developmental change should have greater emphasis than variational developmental change. For Piaget, the acquiring of the stage of formal operations out of the concrete stage of development just as for Vygotsky mediated memory arising after natural memory were examples of qualitative change. Difference in the Theories of Piaget and Vygotsky
According to Lourenco (2012), Piaget embraced an autonomous constructivist approach to development and knowledge in contrast to Vygotsky’s heteronomous sociocultural theoretical perspective. Lourenco stated, “the Piagetian subject is, ultimately, the main constructor of, or responsible for, all or her actions, operations, and social interactions (see Piaget, 1970a, p.15). Contrary to this, the Vygotskian subject’s activity is always referred to an action or operation which initially represents an external, not internal, activity or operation (see Vygotsky, 1978, p. 56)” (p. 284).
