It’s that time of the year again, the time where most everyone in North America and Europe roll their clocks 1 hour forward for daylight savings time(DST). DST begins on the 2nd Sunday in March when clocks leap forward one hour and end on the 1st Sunday of November when the clocks leap backwards 1 hour. This archaic process dates back as far as 1895, and it’s time for it to stop! The time has come to take a good hard look at the benefits of daylight savings time, and realise that the disadvantages it provides far exceed them. So when did DST begin and why was it created? DST takes its roots from a war riddled period of history when a large percentage of countries in the world were at war. It was meant to save on energy, as resources were running thin due to the wars as well as make better use of natural light. After that period of time ended, many countries simply kept it because of the perceived benefits they received from it. One of the most common arguments I hear is that DST saves energy. While this may be true in some places, it is an incredibly misleading fact. Much of the power that is saved by DST is lost by the need to use power early in the morning when the sun is not out, as well as in the south where longer days mean a lot of power is simply wasted. A 2017 meta-analysis of 44 studies concluded that DST lead to a meger savings of only around 0.34%. This number is a lot worse than what many proponents would like for you to believe, and do not make up for the many disadvantages it
