Grendel’s self image changes throughout the course of the book, as well as there are some characters that have an effect upon Grendel’s personality. Three characters that have made a major effect on his personality are Beowulf, The Dragon, and The Shaper. “I was Grendel, Ruiner of Meadhalls, Wrecker of Kings! But also, as never before, I was alone” (Gardner 80). In this quote, it explains how Grendel says he is alone. From the beginning of the book when he encounters the bull he goes off on his own, and has no one to help him or help defend him. Grendel went from being a scary creature that everyone was scared of and then ended up being a creature that was mellow and had feeling and emotions. The charm separates Grendel from the human world which he does not want to be separates from but wishes to join. The Shaper has made a big influence on Grendel, a blind man who lectures the ones around him. Grendel really admires the Shaper for being different from all the others and having so much knowledge that Grendel wished he had himself; he tries acting like the Shaper despite that he himself is not human. “...hearing the harper as if not a man in all that lot had ever twisted a knife in his neighbor’s chest” (Gardner 48). Grendel wishes so much to be like The Shaper because he sees how much the people respect and love The Shaper, he feels like if he was to be like him he wouldn’t feel so lonely and isolated and maybe come to a good relationship with humans.
