There are three different types of a distracted driving; visual, manual, and cognitive. These distractions caused 3,331 deaths in 2011. These distractions also caused 387,000 injuries in 2011 (“Distracted”). These numbers would be significantly lower if their were stronger laws against distracted driving around the country. The most dangerous type of distracted driving is visual. A visual distraction is something that causes someone to take their eyes off the road (“Distraction”). While travelling at speeds of 55 miles per hour, it only takes 5 seconds to travel the length of a football field (Marino). Travelling that distance without looking at the road, will wind up hitting an animal, another car, or worst of all another person. A manual distraction, which involves a person taking their hands off the wheel, connects to They compare distracted driving, to be like skateboarding. They’ve mastered skateboarding, and have never broken a bone in their body while doing so. However if we, who had no idea how to skateboard, tried to we would be guaranteed to get injured. Texting while driving is just a skill that has to be mastered. It’s obvious not to text while on a turn, but perfectly safe to do so while stopping and going at a stop light or stop sign. It’s also safe to text and drive while on desolate roads or highways, because there is less chance to get into an accident. Finally, the law can not be enforced justly. Officers are never seen stopping people for texting (Free). Another reason people are against texting while driving laws are because it just replaces worse distractions. If there are laws against texting while driving, then we will just begin to see a rise of people being distracted by reading the newspaper, applying makeup, eating fast food, or even shaving behind the wheel. Texting while driving laws will just give people reasons to find other things to become distracted
