A Look Into World War I

On July 28, 1914 World War I officially started when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The two sides were called the allies and the central powers. Not long after war was declared Russia, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Serbia, and later the United states joined forces to fight against the central powers. The central powers consisted of Austria-hungary, Italy, and Germany.

To understand why a small dispute turned into to a global war you must go back to June 28, 1914. When Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated. The southern part of Austria-Hungary wanted the duke dead. Militarism was one of the four primary causes of the war. “Because Britain had a large navy, Germany wanted a large navy too. Germany and France competed to build larger armies.” (Major Causes of World War I, page 1.) Once one nation started to build up their military another nation began to do the same, and the domino effect had began. Alliances are the insuresnes of being in good terms with a country. So in case a war began then the country would have someone to help them fight and vise versa. The war may have started between two fairly sized countries but when they ensured their alliances with the other countries it quickly grew into a World War. Imperialism was a big factor to the war because it established dominance over smaller countries that added to the war population. “European nations ruled smaller countries, called colonies, and competed with each other to amass more colonies. Gathering colonies is known as IMPERIALISM.” (Major Causes of World War I, page 1.) And Lastly Nationalism.
