An estimated 19 million Americans (8.2%) report that they have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior (Gates). More than 250,000 children in the U.S. enter the foster care system every year (Meet).The American society plays a crucial role in the adoption of children in the United States. In the U.S. it is a very critical and elongated process to become an adoptive parent for any couple.This process is extremely complex because parenthood is a very important job. A parent must fulfill certain criteria that are in the best interest of the child. It has been proven that gay and lesbian couples are unable to provide specific assets that a heterosexual couple can provide. A child that is adopted by a gay or lesbian couple is at a disadvantage. Some studies show that homosexual couples can fulfill the roles of both parents, but the biological aspect of each parent is lost. Both parents contribute different attributes that develop a well-rounded individual. When a child is adopted by a homosexual couple, they automatically have lost one side of the key attributes. A child may miss the opportunity to have the unconditional love or a mother if he or she has two adoptive dads. A child may also miss out on the “tough love” a father provides. When a child does not have an equal amount of parenting from a mother and a father, he or she will suffer from an unbalanced emotional development more than anything. “Fathers tend to encourage children to take chances and push limits while mothers tend to be protective and more cautious. Each approach is essential for a child 's healthy development. When either parenting style is extreme it can have an unhealthy effect on children, but together the different approaches of a mother and father are balanced to nurture the child, expand his experiences and give him confidence” (Why). All of the key characteristics that are recognized in a mother and a father are what give a child the opportunity to be normal. Due to the research on homosexual adoption, it is better for the child socially and emotionally if a child is raised by a couple that consists of a male and female role model. There is less confusion and risk for a young individual if he or she is raised with equal quantities of motherly and fatherly traits.
