Social media and technology is ruining the social, and communication skills of this generation. The younger generation is spending so much time and effort into posting the wittiest caption, the hottest picture, or sending the right emoji that they have forgotten how to communicate face-to-face. Social media and technology is conditioning children and teens to live out their entire lives via the internet. With the technology addiction the younger generation is facing, they have lost proper communication skills, social skills, and productivity. For the younger generation, proper spelling and grammar usage is a lower priority among social media, and texting. Teens and children cast aside the grammar and vocabulary skill they study in school whenever the access social media. Children learn how to process emotion, and behavior modification from identifying social cues, with the technology filter, young children and teens are not grasping social concepts such as eye contact, and minor facial expressions. “It is important to know that the gestures make a big portion of the way people communicate and the inability to understand them makes it difficult to communicate with formal audiences.” (Unknown author, Harvard Blog). A teen who does not have the proper understanding of physical communication could fail to identify emotions such as frustration, discomfort, or depression. “Understanding the non-verbal aspects of communication is crucial because social situations we need to modify our behavior in response to the reactions of others (Knapp & Hall, 2010).” (As cited by NYBH Staff Writer, New York Behavioral Health).
