In the world of Equality the people are controlled by fear. They are told that they are doing it for their brothers to cover up for their fear. They want people to feel free but also control them. The leaders want no free thought outside what they want them to think about. Equality was the one person in a long time to defy the leaders. This all started with his experiments in his tunnel. His motivations for doing this are different but the same in the beginning and the end.

In the beginning of the story his motivations are both selfish and selfless. The selfless reasons include giving it to his people. He wanted to give it to the people he lived all his life with. He just wanted to make their lives better and make it easier for them to work. On page 25 he said " We give you the power of the sky". Later on on that page he states that" We give you the key to the earth." He also had selfish reasons to do his experiments. The one main reason is because he wanted knowledge. Knowledge is power and knowing is the best way to be the best. He wanted to know everything about the world around him. On page 20 he said " We were interested in the science of things." Knowledge to these people was a crime. They would rather die than learn new things. They think that putting back the knowledge they once knew would make them evil. I say that the world would be a better place. Technology would be super advanced. That is because the people would work hard to make the best. Medicine would be able to cure almost anything. People would live longer and create more technology. This would increase the amount of people on the earth. This would incite people to grow more food.
