The WaterGate Scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s. The affair began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the DNC headquarters at the Watergate complex in june 1972. The FBI connected cash found on the burglars to a slush fund used by the Committee. President Nixon tried to cover up that he was involved in this. When the were able to connect this to Nixon they found out that Nixon had abused he's adminstration powers in many different ways. EVIDENCE In july 1973 evidence pointed against The president's staff. The investigation revealed that the President hade a tape-recording system in his office and that he recorded many conversations with. After a while President Nixon had to release these tapes to the government investigators. When they got the tapes the tapes had evidence that they tried to cover up things that happend after the break-in. There is alot of info about the cover ups alot of speculations. Nixon's own reaction to the break-in was skeptism. Some people was sure of that Nixon didn't know that the break-in was going to advance. One of the most important tapes was the smoking gun tape. In 1974 the white house realeased a unknown audio tape it was recorded only a few days after the break in. It revealed Nixon, Swingle and Haldeman meeting in the Oval Office and formulating a plan to block CIA investigation in the security problems. Before this tape was released President Nixon had denied any involment in the scandal. That was the tape that proved that Nixon had lied to the nation, the tape proved that he was involved in the coverup from the beginning. Resignation of President Nixon was done the week after.
