Introduction: The question that the researcher is trying to answer is if there is acidification alters oceanic life due to a change in pH. The hypothesis is if there is a change in pH in the tank then the fish will have altered feeding patterns, stunted growth, and abnormal behavior. Even if there is a slight change in pH distinct abnormalities will occur. This simulation of this experiment will represent a sample for the whole ocean and how pH has affected ocean life due to runoff and toxic waste put into the water.
To tell how healthy a body of water is, you would need to measure the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water. Water is only able to dissolve a certain amount of oxygen to be classified as healthy. And once, the maximum amount of oxygen from the atmosphere that can dissolve in water, which is about 9.8 mg/l, is reached , no more oxygen will dissolve. This shows that water needs to maintain a certain amount of dissolved oxygen, typically 4-5 mg/l, for it to be classified as healthy and to support aquatic animals. If the dissolved oxygen levels drop below 5.0 mg/l, the aquatic life will be put under stress. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is affected by several physical and biological (natural) factors.

It ranges from zero to fourteen with seven being neutral. Anything less than seven is considered acidic and anything greater is considered basic. A river can become acidic through acid rain or certain pollutants. A non toxic stream is supposed to be around a pH of seven, and anything too far away could harm aquatic life and drinking water quality. Changing the pH of the water affects the solubility of nutrients and heavy metals in the water that aquatic life needs to survive. Dissolved oxygen is how much oxygen is dissolved in the water. Life in the rivers and streams breath this oxygen in order to survive. If the dissolved oxygen were to drop too low, the life in those waters would begin to die off. The world around us is composed of all acids and bases including the ones in air and water. As humans, we come into contacts with acids and bases each day. For example, vinegar, lemon juice and vitamin C are acids that are used everyday. Testing the pH is important at it determines whether the substance is a strong or weak acid/base. Indicators such as methyl orange, bromothymol blue and litmus are examples of indicators that are used to test the pH of swimming pools as acids from the human body and acid rain could change the pH in the pool. Also, they are used to test the pH of aquarium water and ensure that the pH doesn't exceed or fall below the pH ranges that fish can survive in. A typical fish can have better quality life in pH ranges between 7.0 and 8.0.
