Question: To what extent was slavery the primary cause of the Civil War? Slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War. The North and South disagreed over whether slavery should be kept or gotten rid of. If there was no debate over slavery, there probably would have been no Civil War in the first place. Therefore, slavery was the key reason why the war was started to a very high extent. The United States was a very divided country during this time. The North and the South both had their reasons on why they would want to abolish and keep slavery, respectively.
