Whether or not war is justifiable is a topic often brought up in many situations like normal conversations or even political debates. The idea of war is not justifiable although many will try to rationalize why going to war could be beneficial. War causes more problems for the population. War does not help, it destroys homes, environment, the economy and changes people’s lives forever. War is often started for reasons in which violence could have been avoided. For example World War l started simply because Franz Ferdinand, the archduke of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. The war could have been avoided if the dispute was settled verbally or by prosecuting the defendant. The war of 1812 is another good example of an unnecessary war. People often lose loved ones as casualties of war. Soldiers and bystanders of both sides are often killed. World war 1 had over 17 million casualties and over 20 million wounded. It is ranked as one of the deadliest conflicts, something that could have been avoided. Millions of people died for a cause that could have easily been avoided and a percentage of the causalities were innocent people. For this reason, war is not a justifiable option, when there are other ways for countries, nations to settle a dispute. In the text On War by James Boswell, Boswell states “When I saw working men engaged with grave assiduity in fashioning weapons of death, I was struck with wonder at the shortsightedness, the caecae mentes of human beings, who were thus soberly preparing the instruments of destruction of their own species.” For Boswell he looked farther into war and didn't see it as a patriotic act but rather a means of killing off humans. Individuals who justify war see war as an economic windfall. These individuals have no connection to those who suffer great loss due to war.
