Joey is the main character in the story War Horse. He is a young horse, who shows many different character traits throughout the story, including some such as loyalty, bravery, and compassion. Raised by a young boy, Albert Narcott, before he is sold to the army to be used during the war. He has to deal with being separated from his ‘human’ and the stress of war. Joey must face rigorous training, and terrifying battles where he deals with loss and gunfire.
During his time in training, he made a friend, whose name was Top thorn. He was a large, black horse. They two worked side by side pulling ambulances, cannons, and even riding head first into gunfire with soldiers on their backs. He charged through a field, knowing that he could be shot down at any moment. He even galloped through a ‘no-man’s land’ littered with bodies, bombs, and barbed wire, all for the sake of the war. He showed pure bravery throughout the novel, no matter how dire or dangerous the situation may have been.
Compassion is another important character trait that Joey showed in the story. He cared deeply for all of his friends, including Top Thorn, Albert, and his first rider in the war, Captain James Nicholas. He loved each one of them deeply, and they all meant a lot to him. The loss of them all affected Joey deeply, driving him throughout the main plot of the book. The loss of his best friend throughout the story, Top Thorn, pushed Joey to keep going and keep fighting, to stay alive and find Albert. The loss is what kept Joey going, when he was nearing the end of his strength.
Overall, Joey was a very well written character, who had many traits not mentioned above. He is a brave, loyal, and compassionate character who is driven by his love and loyalty to his friends and family. He had many smaller traits, and many other traits that shape both the character and the story to what it is. Without Joey’s, he may have given up. Without his bravery, he may not have made it. And without his compassion, he may have not kept going when he wanted to give
