Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to discuss Walt Disney World Company and its corporate ethics. The investor relations, philanthropy, and environmental contributions of the company will be discussed in order to scale the integrity and social responsibility of the well-known company. Introduction
Business ethics is highly stressed within today’s corporate world. Most businesses are implementing more strategies to create a healthy and ethical work environment. For large companies, like Walt Disney World, maintaining transparency with investors, customers, and the general public is of the essence. Disney takes philanthropic action by monetary donation and volunteerism. “In 2014, Disney gave $315.7 million to nonprofit organizations helping kids, families, and communities in need through charitable cash giving, in-kind and product contributions, and public service announcements.” (Philanthropy, 2016) In the past year, it also “donated 23.1 million books to schools and children.” ((Philanthropy, 2016) The media has given the company attention whenever it makes multi-million dollar donations like it did to UNCF and Feeding America. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts provide the publicity necessary to maintain a positive image. In addition, Disney encourages both its employees and families across the nation to do volunteering work through the Disney “Voluntears” challenge and through service programs like the Disney Hospital Care Package program and Friends for Change. The goal of eco-friendly organizations is to decrease total contribution to global warming. Disney is no different. “Since 2014, (Disney) successfully reduced net emissions by 31%.” (Environment, 2016) As for the water theme parks, Disney plans to develop “conservation plans for new sites” to be eco-friendly and backs them with policies like the paper, Disney merchandise bag, and healthy cleaning policies. Because the nature of the company is to cater to children, the park has set-ups that encourage recycling. Outside of the physical site, “the Disney conservation fund projection has helped protect more than 400 species, including elephants, butterflies, and coral reefs, through its annual conservation grants.” (Environment, 2016) The grants awarded to different groups help to spread the monetary resources needed to run community environmental projects.
