CHILDHOOD
Walter Elias Disney was an entrepreneur, animator, voice actor and film producer, who was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, to his father Elias Disney, and his mother Flora Call Disney. After Walt’s birth, his moved to Marceline, Missouri, where Walt lived most of his childhood. He had very early interests in art, and would often sell drawings to neighbours to make extra money, since he came from a poor family. In 1911, his family moved to Kansas City, where Disney developed a love for trains. His uncle, Mike Martin, was a train engineer. Walt began to love, and appreciate nature, wildlife, family and community, which were a large part of his life. Walt was encouraged by his mother, and older brother, Roy to pursue his talents of drawing.

Ub Iwerks drew the character, and Disney became his voice. According to Disney, the inspiration for Mickey Mouse came from an actual pet mouse he kept in his office in Kansas City. Initial failure with Ub Iwerks sent Disney to Hollywood, California, in 1923. In partnership with his older brother, Roy, he began producing cartoons for Universal Studios.

Cartoons at this time were just usually animation with no sound, but Walt introduced something entirely new with synchronized sound and animations. Steamboat Willie was Walt’s first big hit. Steamboat Willie was publicized on November 18, 1928 at Colony Theater in New York.

Where up to this point in his life he had many role models and people he looked up to, now he was a role model to many people. In 1903, parents Elias and Flora added a daughter, Ruth, to the family. Elias worried about big-city life, so the Disney family moved to a farm near Marceline, Missouri, in 1906 (Jaffe 7). Walt’s job on the farm was to take care of the animals, many of which would inspire his famous characters later in life (“Walt Disney”). These beloved animals were also the subjects of Walt’s first sketches.

The cartoonist’s career and company survived many eras of American history; this included the second World War, a harsh time where everyone seemed to be working and living for the war. During World War II, Disney contributed to the war effort through the creation of military insignias, aircraft nose art, and propaganda films. Throughout World War II, Walt Disney Productions created a total of approximately 1,200 military emblems.
Not only does Mickey Mouse have educational purposes, he also tries to create a Utopia environment for all families that use and watch Mickey’s products. Mickey Mouse wasn’t always known as good, and wasn’t always a mouse. Before Mickey there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, also created by Walt Disney, who would get into all kinds of trouble no matter how hard he tried and would always remain somewhat happy (Borak). Although Walt was happy and proud of Oswald, he realized that he did not own all of the rights of Oswald and Walt did not like the thought of not officially owning the character that he had created, so Walt moved on, leaving Oswald in the dust (Borak). That was when Walt decided to create his own character and try to use it to get big again, and this is where Mickey Mouse came into play.

Walt Disney was the most creative and innovative person in the entertainment business in the 20th century. His movies and animations had a huge impact on family life and the movie and animation industry. He also created shows for television and opened Disney Land which were both huge successes. Walt Disney's Interest in art began at a young age. Walt went for his dreams and made them a reality. His hard work to become a movie and animation creator payed off by the time he was in his twenties . Walt Disney's accomplishments show that nothing is impossible.
He took bold actions like creating new methods of animation and brilliant new characters such as Oswald, Mickey and so many other characters. Now I bet you're wondering why did you do this project on him and did he inspire you in anyway, and if so how? Well, I answer to both of those questions for you. Well, I did the project on him because there's so many things that I wanted to learn about him and because I wanted to do somebody who did something artistic and yes, he did inspire me because when I learned how much ups and downs he had to go and how he still didn’t give up and was able to make the first movie with sound and color, now I know that if something is hard, just keep pushing and you'll make it, if you try. So why do I need to know about him, well you need to know about him because he was the one that created movies with sound, and I bet half of the movies in your house wouldn't be there if it wasn't for Walt
