Economy is a car which is fueled upon the purchases of merchandise. These purchases are converted into economic growth through consumption, which acts as an engine converting purchases of merchandise into commercial growth. This fallacy keeps America in first gear for it limits the country from overcoming certain slopes. This misconception has led to a rapidly burgeoning system of supply and demand that tears apart the terrain in order to build cities and factories that lead to efficiency and productivity that perpetuate the system in which prospers the economy. The film is intended for people that consume due to the postulation that the expenditure of material goods stimulates the economy. Wall-E targets both major corporations and consumers that don’t question the validity of consumerism by displaying a dystopic future of an uninhabitable Earth. Propaganda advertisements such as “do your part and fill your cart” (Wall-E) ridicule the belief of purchasing being the path to prosperity and the fuel upon which the economy thrives. The slogan uses pathos by appealing to the patriotism clients pontificating that the only way that they can contribute to the economy of the world is to fill their cart. This statement possesses no validity for this system would enforce corporations’ power for their investments and procedures would control the economic boosts and busts. Not only does it allocate power to businesses, but it also is not a sustainable practice for consumption is the exhaustion of materials. When one consumes, they use things up. Through this a system has been created in which human have one directive which is to consume. In the movie, people subliminally purchase anything that is advertised to them for on the axiom that is all they are there for. They have no ambition or connections with one another. In the film, BnL gives everything a directive. This shows how thoughtless society is when making purchases and allowing corporation to control culture. Even though society survives when constituted upon such a system, the people can’t thrive. “I don’t want to survive, I want to live!” (Wall-E). On great example of not being able to truly live or thrive until breaking away from the complacent life in which one consumes is the captain. The captain of the axiom has done nothing because his autopilot computer AI unit does everything for him. He has been complacent in letting businesses steering the direction in which his desires are being lace and choosing his values. When he hears that he can return to Earth, at first, he isn’t interested, but then he sees the plant and is able to recognize the true value of life. With this desire, he gets Eve and Wall-E to help him in a mission to return to Earth.
