Within this data workshop one will analysis how Wal-Mart will be viewed within three sociological perspectives. One will look at a functionalist, conflict, and symbolic perspective and how they can be viewed at through the lens of sociology.
In a functionalist viewpoint, an institution like Wal-Mart only exists because it serves some form of purpose. The main purpose is that Wal-Mart serves as a one-stop shop for most of society and can function properly due to its many workers and individual contributors. One can go to Wal-Mart for any of life's everyday needs like clothes or food, which helps establish better opportunities for local communities to have better resources. Because of Wal-Mart's low prices and even their price match guarantee program, individuals within society overall has more power to gain the proper resources necessary to live. Another effective contribution that Wal-Mart gives to society is that it provides jobs for individuals, which helps the economy grow overall. But another individual, possibly the worker, may view these symbols as a way for Wal-Mart just to avoid a lawsuit from some customer. A lot of these symbols get their meanings from people within society based on their first impressions on that individual and how people respond to that symbol. If the greeters at Wal-Mart had a positive attitude and smiled, most who would encounter this symbol and have a friendly like feeling towards Wal-Mart. Now if someone were to trip over a wet floor sign, they may have a negative feeling towards Wal-Mart and feel as though the sign was carelessly placed.
