Wait Till Next Year is a book written by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Wait Till Next Year is a book written in Goodwin’s point of view set in Rockville Center, New York. The book begins with Goodwin’s father teaching her the scorekeeping rules of baseball in the summer of 1949. After her father taught her how to properly record a baseball game she would sit in front of the radio and listen to the game every day and would record everything each player did during that game. Then when her father would arrive home from work she would relay to him all that had happened during the game of that day. As Goodwin looks back on this in her book she begins to think that it is because of these times with her father that she has a love for history and for storytelling. Although her father got her interested in storytelling it was Goodwin’s mother that got her interested in books. She goes on to tell that if her mother was not doing anything else she would always be reading no matter what time it was. Goodwin writes that every night before bedtime her mother would come and read to her. Goodwin’s favorite times with her mother though were when her mother would tell her real life stories about when she was younger. During this time Goodwin liked to believe that her mother forgot about the pain that she went through constantly due to her bad health. While Doris Goodwin’s mother and father were a very important part of her life growing up her sisters were just as important. She talks about how while Charlotte, her oldest sister was not around as much as her other older sister, Jeanne she was still very important to her. She goes into detail about a shopping trip that was taken with the oldest and youngest siblings and how after the shopping trip to Sa... ... middle of paper ... ...mother went into the city to meet her father to celebrate the victory. While that wonderful night stayed in Goodwin’s mind things began to change for her and the people around her. Neighbors that she had known her whole life began to move. As if close neighbors moving away was not enough Doris’s best friend Elaine and her family moved away as well. After her best friend moved away Doris also had to deal with the terrible news that Walter F. O’Malley owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers decided to move the Dodgers to Los Angeles California. The same year the Dodgers moved is the same year that Goodwin’s mothers’ health steadily decreased. Goodwin’s mother died on February 22, 1958. She had died in her sleep causing Goodwin’s father to find his deceased wife when he woke up in the morning. These things combined is what officially ended the childhood of Doris Kearns Goodwin.
