W.E.B DuBois’s The Souls of Black Folk mentioned the concept of “the Veil”, a type of mental clouding that blocks one’s ability to recognize certain social environments. Dubois used the veil to explain the two social realities that African Americans faced in American society. African Americans, from Dubois’s time in the modern era were able to recognize two social environments: one that is American, and one that is African American. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf provided a great example on how the concept of the Veil could be applied to atrocities the people experienced during the First World War. One major character of Mrs. Dalloway was Septimius, a veteran who struggled to ease back into civilian life. The mental shock that caused Septimius’s condition was based on the emotional trauma Septimius experienced when he saw his friend, Evans, die in front of him. This caused Septimius to go through periods of great emotional stress, as well as babble about completely random subjects. Septimius was a victim of what contemporary doctors called “shell shock”, something that was tough to treat due the relatively infantile state of psychiatric medicine. The lack of knowledge about mental disorders caused doctors to prescribe many harmful methods that they thought would heal their patient. At one point in the story Sir William, Septimius’s doctor, exhibited the Veil by saying, “there was no alternative. It was a question of law” (Woolf; pg. 96-97). This message showed how impaired the doctors were by placing their patients in remote sanitariums, keeping them out of sight of the public. The doctors that attempted to treat Septimius were stuck within a Veil that prevented them from understanding more about Septimius’s problems. Eventually Septimius is penned to be placed in a psychiatric ward, but this made him afraid of what type of treatment he would face at such a place. Out of sheer dread Septimius killed himself by throwing himself out of a window. Septimius’s struggle was the same for many other veterans returning from the Great War. The struggle of the veterans happened because of the Veil the doctors had when trying to find a solution to the mental disorders the soldiers had. Due to the lack of an ability to find a cure, Doctors as a whole saw that the only way to solve this problem afflicting society was to send the afflicted away from the sight of the
