Part I: Volunteerism and Community Service in the United States
Research shows that when Americans are "properly asked to serve", they serve, says the Corporation for National and Community Service, on their website dedicated to U.S. volunteerism(Volunteering and Civic Life in America 2014). The question, then, is what does "properly asked to serve" consist of.
If the government issues a call to all able United States citizens to donate a mere three to five hours a week to a teen-mentoring, child-tutoring, or other volunteer program for the benefit of the country and the good of society, will it happen? Will people, hearing this summons, eagerly and/or obediently sign up at their favorite charity organization for a shift? Will they, with no monetary compensations, social benefits, or employment benefits give of their valuable and potentially dollar-earning time out of the goodness of their hearts and concern for the future well-being of society? Perhaps this isn't what "properly asked to serve" consists of for North Americans.
When people do respond to their summons, researchers say, things happen. The mentoring system is supposedly one of the most beneficial of volunteer activities, in terms of reaching "at risk" kids. The Philadelphia Summit on volunteerism that took place in April of 1997 targeted five basic needs of at-risk kids: a relationship with a caring adult, supervised and safe sites for play, marketable skills, a healthy start, and a sense of service. American has placed it footprint in 5 great locations, John F. Kennedy, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and Miami International, to offer the best viable solution to any one traveler’s needs (Horton, 2013). By using the hub-and-spoke system, American can offer an exponential amount of locations to travel to for a reduce cost (Combs, 2003). Although this may save time and money for the consumer as well as the business, the negative aspect would be the extended duration in travel for the customer.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aircraft certification, “a large aircraft refers to an aircraft of more than 12,500 pounds which is the maximum certificated takeoff weight.” The heaviest and largest aircraft in the world have a maximum takeoff weight of over 600 tons. Since larger aircraft have greater capacity, as well as advanced technological features, airport management needs to make changes that cater to their operation. The first reaction of management at large airports was to restrict the new, large aircraft by assigning them to specific terminals, routes and runways. However, this led to delays and air traffic congestion. Given the growing number of new, large aircraft, the only safe and efficient way to manage air transport is to upgrade infrastructure. This paper will focus on the impact that newer, larger aircraft have on airport management. In discussing this, we will look at the changes that have taken place since these aircraft entered service.
There are some misconceptions on the issues of charity and solidarity when volunteers work with individuals who are less fortunate. In his informative piece, “Rethinking Volunteerism in America” Gavin Leonard addresses the key differences between charity and solidarity and how it is often intertwined in the minds of volunteers. Charity involves individuals providing help to others without having the proper knowledge of the person’s needs and wants. These volunteers assume that their service is helpful. Individuals who make charitable contributions often make short term commitments instead of implementing a long term goal. In addition, Leonard believes that volunteers who have a charity mindset are solely trying to come out their own guilt

In the past four years of my life, volunteer work has left an indelible mark on my heart and mind. When I became a volunteer, I had a very vague notion of leadership. As my high school days come to an end, I am left with the feeling that I have finally come into my own shoes, discovering the things that are important to me and those that are not. I have found my personal leadership style, and I now pay attention to the leaders I come across each day. For this reason, volunteering has been both an enlightening and inspiring experience, for I am surrounded by peers, mentors, and the volunteer program director, all of whom are leaders with creative visions of their own.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with.
