“All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.” Is a quote taken from the book Candide, written by Voltaire. The author (Voltaire) is very persistent with this quote, for he wrote it many times throughout the entire book. The protagonist of the story is a character known as Candide, “a young lad blessed by nature with the most agreeable manners.” (Candide, 19), whom Voltaire used to express what he believed were the flaws of the 18th century French society. Voltaire expressed his views by writing Candide, and making the story protagonist travel trough Europe, and other countries, including France, and Eldorado. Candide asks Martin (a companion of Candide) if he has ever been to France, and he responds by saying “Yes”, and later going on to saying “There are some parts of the country where people are simple and stupid, and others where they pretend to be witty.” (Candide, 94). What Voltaire is saying is that people in France are simple, stupid, and pretend to be witty. The character Martin goes on, telling Candide that no matter “wherever you go in France, you will find that their three chief occupations are making love, backbiting, and talking nonsense.” (Candide, 94). And It wasn’t long before Candide had his own experiences in France to know that what Martin told him was absolutely true. Soon after Candide, and Martin arrived to France, Candide got sick, and thought it would have been hard for him to be cured; Candide wore a diamond ring on his finger that attracted him much attention from everyone. He soon became very popular. Martin said to Candide “ I remember being ill myself during my first visit to Paris. I was very poor. But then I had friends, no kind of ladies, and no doctors, so I soon recovered.” (Candide, 97). By writing this Voltaire is criticizing the society of France.
