A person walks out on a street and sees a soldier murder a young man right before their eyes. They look at it like it is nothing and goes on to their daily business. Blood, gore, and death were a typical thing while living under a bloodthirsty man’s rule. Vlad the Impaler is famous for defending Romania but is also infamous for murdering thousands of civilians.
Vlad the Impaler had a very troubling and ghastly childhood. He was born in 1431 in Transylvania, now known as modern day Romania. Vlad was named after his father Vlad II Dracul who was ruler of Wallachia located south of Transylvania. Vlad became skilled at warfare and was a very good horseman while he was imprisoned and tortured under the Ottomans, a Turkish empire and later by the Hungarians. Vlad’s father was killed in a swamp close by Balteni, Wallachia in 1447. Vlad’s younger brother was tortured, blinded, and buried alive which may have had an effect on the fact that Vlad was a callous killer (Lallinla).
Even though Dracula went through a living hell in the time of adolescence, he overcame it. After incarceration, Vlad was released and he returned to his territory to create a movement aimed at attaining his father’s position as ruler. Vlad first sought after the throne and then he wanted to institute a strong state through intrepid actions and utter terror. Vlad faced trial on how to balance Hungary and the Ottomans. He attempted to restore the balance by ruling in a gory manner designed to bring fear into the minds of components and partners that were similar (Wilde).

Vlad was killed in battle near Bucharest shortly after he returned to Wallachia to conquer it in 1476. The Turks took his head to Constantinople as a trophy. Vlad is honored in Romania and Bulgaria for defending them against the Ottoman rule (Swan). His admiration broadened in 1976 on the 500th anniversary of his death for preserving Wallachian Independence for which Vlad is called father of Romanian dominion (Lawrence). Vlad lived in a time where print was evolving and became one of the first horror individual to be printed in fiction (Wilde).
From birth, to childhood, to adolescence, Vlad’s life was brutal and gruesome. He fought and led many wars. He killed thousands of people including his own subjects. Despite being a ruthless murderer and leader, Vlad the Impaler led his people into Independence and peace. In some people’s eyes he is considered a hero.
