The average person who plays video games regularly is thirty-three years old (Issitt). This topic is important because video games have been given an unfair stereotype. Video games have the stereotype of taking over the lives of teenagers and making them violent. However, the benefits of video games outweigh the negatives. Before this subject can be analyzed, there are a few key terms that must be defined. The first term is meta-analytic procedures which are the statistical methods used to analyze and combine results from previous, related literature (Study: Violent Video Game Play). Also, America’s Army is the official video game of the United States Army and is used as a training platform for soldiers (Suellentrop). Now that some …show more content…
Most gamers take their anger out on video games. There are more violent games now then there has ever been (Issitt) but, the murder rate is declining (Suellentrop). These video games also help people learn how to deal with these conflicts in a social manner through online game play. Gerhard Jones argues “Engaging in violent fantasies provides a way for children to express violent tendencies safely and learn to control the feelings of violence and frustration that are an essential part of emotional development,” (Issitt). Troubled children, such as those in school shootings, might be drawn to act out the violent tendencies they are experiencing which could help to prevent them from acting out violently in the real world (Issitt). However, videogames do not only allow players to control conflict, but they also allow players to meet new people and make new …show more content…
Video games can be educational because many games contain educational elements. Also, numerous games depict fantasy creations of historic events. Many educators create games that provide accurate historical information (Issitt). The great advantage of historical games is that they allow players to theorize about different results in history, for example, if Germany had won World War II (Issitt). Video games also provide a form of mental exercise (Suellentrop). Video games can help people think on a deeper level, while also allowing people to have fun with it.
Video games also have some good effects on the body. Hand-eye coordination is improved with video game playing (Suellentrop). Spatial Orientation skills are also improved when playing videogames (Issitt). Other Benefits of video games are improved vision contrast and improved visual recollection. Now that some benefits of video games have been named, it is time to address some arguments against video
Video games have positive and negative aspects. Acording to a study, those who spend hours and hours in playing ‘civic games’ were found to take more part in different community services like social work, politics or protests, as compared to those who never took interest in vidoe games. Hence video games are proved to increase one’s social interaction skills. The kind of friendship and ethics that are learnt by the young gamers while playing video games provide evidence that they are not completely harmful to our society. (Heins, 62)
The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review on existing articles relating to the possibility of violent video games promoting aggressive behavior. The hypothesis set forth was that people who played non-violent video games displayed more Prosocial behavior versus those who played violent video games displayed more antisocial and aggressive behavior. A search was conducted on regular search engines on the internet, and on EBSCOhost using the title “can violent video games promote aggressive behavior.” The research articles presented are obtained from five case studies each focusing on different measures that were obtained, methods used, the participants involved, the designs of the study, and the results of the studies.
Some of the most controversial video games are also the ones with the greatest potential benefits. Fast-paced, “first person shooters” has been accused of being too violent, but the benefits gamers gain from playing them are astounding. It is only common sense that the only way to get good at something is to practice. Baseball players didn’t be...

The mass production and use of video games, they have been associated with warping the mind of the younger generations who play them. In preparation for writing this essay I did a google search of video games in news headlines one of the first things that came up was the headline about a fourteen year old boy who hung himself after playing Call of Duty. They go on in the subtitle to say that other mass murders were also avid players of Call of Duty, this is how the media uses video games as a fall man for not addressing that all of these people had mental disorders that were not being treated because their parents didn’t want to address their problems. The only side of the argument that is publicized is the harm video games can do never the positives, things like improved spatial cognitive development, team building skills, and increased problem solving can all be attributed to playing video games. Yet the proliferation of some of the negatives to playing video games being blown out of proportion by the media, degrades the usefulness of video games and halts further development for something that should be beneficial to us. The arguments against video games make the point that playing games that include violence increases the aggression is the person who plays them, or that playing video games can create an addiction. Video games need to be shown for both the good they can do, and have parents engaged enough to understand what their child should be using them for because the problems with video games have less to do with the video games and more to do about the people using them.
I've been playing, reading and studying videogames since the early 90's and have firsthand knowledge of the possitives and detraments that come along with this hobby. Videogames are a multi billion dollar industry even over taking movies as the most lucrative for of entertainment. So it's no wonder questions are being raised much like the same one's asked of movies when they first came out. Are games to violent, do they teach people how to use weapons, do they make youth complacent and unmotivated to finish studies for example. These questions though warrented have for the most part been proven wrong through vast amounts of studies. I believe that games are a possitive force for education, relaxation and just pure enjoyment and have little to no negative effects.

Are Video Games Bad or Good? Whether video games are beneficial or harmful to our growing youth has been a long, exhausting debate. Video and online games have long been accused of negatively affecting children’s health not only physically, but mentally as well, including laziness, violent tendencies, social isolation, and obesity. However, recent research is proving otherwise.
A study in the medical journal Pediatrics discusses how a group of 181 Japanese students from the ages 12 to 15, and 364 U.S. children from the ages 9 to 12 were tested in order to observe the effects of violent video games. It was recorded that the children who were more subjected to the violent video games were more aggressive than their complements who did not participate in the games. (Moeller) The children who played the games also ended up controlling numerous situations inadequately; this involves pushing or shoving for what they wanted, or yelling at each other. It is tolerable to have faith in that this is a standard stereotype for children at this age; however, children are becoming more and more out of control and belligerent. Research has also found that, controlling for prior aggression, children who played more violent video games during the beginning of the school year showed more aggression than other children later in the school year
There are several negative stereotypes associated with video games and those who play them; some of these may often hold true. However, there are plenty of learning opportunities in video games. While the direct purpose of some games is to educate or train, other games that do not directly have this purpose can still become a learning experience for the player. As Ntiedo Etuk, president of the educational video game company Tabula Digital said, “The traditional view of video games has been that they are distractions from the task of learning” (Electronic Education Report 1). Video games are an effective tool for learning and retaining skills both inside and outside the classroom environment. The basic cycle of game play--the introduction to the game, game play, collaboration, improvement of these between each round, and evaluation at the end of the game (Klievink and Janssen 159)--are nearly parallel to the traditional classroom learning cycle of reading a textbook or listening to a lecture, taking a quiz, studying, focusing on items missed on the quiz, and taking a test or exam. Within this cycle, there are many opportunities to develop and perfect both educational, life, and occupational skills.
Video games are used to improve physical health. Playing video games does not mean being inactive. New and improved video games involve and incorporate different types of movement in the actual game. Certain video games can reduce fat causing global weight loss (Recio 143). By turning game systems into exercise, new generation games draw people into activities and get heart rates pumping. Schools have incorporated video games into part of their physical education program. Children’s waists lines have gone down by inches due to playing video games in gym class. In gym, the machines teach things like balance, timing, and coordina...
