The video I selected was a reading of “Square Cat” by Elizabeth Schoonmaker at the Wilkinson Public Library of Telluride. This is a modern day tale about a cat who is a square trying to fit into a round society. Throughout the video, the audience is shown how being different is normal. The audience, primarily made of children, are responsive, excited, and engaged in the story. They kept making comments whenever they were excited or they thought that something was funny. The room is filled with bright colors and pictures on the wall. The library has Storytime for children during the week, and for families the weekends. The 4 adults at the front of the group were all smiling and clapping along. During the story, the women spoke very clearly and loud with hand motions. The children seemed very engaged in the story and paid very close attention to the story and the pictures. …show more content…
This story shows children a fun and silly way on what it means to be themselves through a cat that does not literally fit into her surroundings. In the end, the cat discovers she is special in her own way. By showing someone who does not fit in in a very obvious way the child might find someone to look up to and see how to deal with the situation and feelings on what it means to not fit in. These important lessons show children, that even if they are different they always have something special about themselves. I think this story was chosen because it helps teach children at a young age what it is like to fit
In conclusion, the story describes that life changes, and nothing stays the same throughout it. It is in the hands of the people to decide that how they want their life to be. They can make it as beautiful as they want to and they can also make it worse than it has ever been
When Melinda started her frist day pf highschool, she suffered from peer presure: her best friend left her, everyone hares her because she broke the party last year by calling the police, MElinda knew that no one knows the truth but she is go afride to speak the truth. Laurie Anderson used the sllusion of Rudolph the red-nosed raindear. In the story of rudolph, the red-nosed reindear is considered an”outcast” in the group of reindeers, Melinda feel like this reindeer, theye did nothing wronge, but the pressure they recive is runing their life. Anderson used the story of Rudolph to show how Melinda fell right now, and because the majority knows the story of Rudolph, they can understand Melinda’s feeling easier.
It deals with obstacles in life and the ways they are over come. Even if you are different, there are ways for everyone to fit in. The injustices in this book are well written to inform a large audience at many age levels. The book is also a great choice for those people who cheers for the underdogs. It served to illustrate how the simple things in life can mean everything.
The film "Love is Never Silent" is an emotional movie build with sad, joyful, angry and excitement feelings. When Margaret 's little brother dies I felt so sorry for her family and especially for her because she would be alone in the hearing and sign world. But everything got better when she met her husband, which was so emotional; to see her finally be happy. Although it was frustrating when Margaret kept putting off telling people she had deaf parents, since to me it seemed like that was nothing to be ashamed of at all. It is sad to see deaf people be in a way, discriminated for being deaf like the scene in the movie where the factory boss blames a woman of being guilty for getting hurt just for being deaf. Also when Margaret 's father buys the audiogram to prevent him from signing to Margaret are her graduation, it was so sad to see that scene of the movie because you can how much Margaret 's parent care for Margaret and how they want to blended it with the other parents. The whole movie was great and truly improve my knowledge of how deaf people lived their life with the birth of a hearing child. Therefore being in this class has taught me a great amount of the way deaf culture has developed and how people throughout history have made a great change in the life 's of deaf people. I have never known or met a deaf person in my life, but taking ASL was one of the
The setting, symbolism, and theme of Miss Brill are all important to the story. For example, the beautiful but cool fall day provides the opportunity to introduce the fur. The fur helps us to see that Miss Brill has created a fantasy life in which she and the "Little rogue" are important players. The band's tempo helps to convey Miss Brill's mood. The small box in which the fur is stored is representative of Miss Brill's room. This story is a poignant illustration of how society excludes some people and how these people may cope with the isolation.
Johnson starts with an example of hidden meaning. In the scene where Fern pleads for the to save the life of the newly born runt; Fern states “the pig couldn’t help being born small ... If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?” () Fern relates herself to the piglet focusing on the idea that they are the same. Johnson shows the idea that children must develop the idea that there are differences in situation, for instance in this situation Fern sees herself equal to the piglet not as human and animal. Later, after ferns father allows her to keep and care for the piglet the imagination of a child is represented. Fern names the piglet Wilbur, bottle feeding him, pushing him in a stroller, and washing him in a bath. Johnson explains how this scene reflects
Kierder adds this narrative into his essay because he wanted to show people that he never was really a cat person. At the beginning he talks about how much people tend to love their pets when they don't have children. He then says that he never meant to become this person but it just kinda of happened. When he found the stray cat, he never intended to keep. Kierder goes on to say that he tried to find it a home, but thee cat was his once he feed him that crab meat. Kierder adds this to give the essay feelings. How he went from I don't want this cat, to I am a crazy cat man
The poet uses a caged carnivorous cat as a symbol of the roar inside of us. This panther is not true to his purpose, while he is enclosed living in solitude with no emotion left in his soul. As humans, we can easily relate to the feeling of not being true to our own fulfillment, and empathize with the panther’s dilemma. The animal lives inside of our souls awaiting just one opportunity to escape and reveal our true meaning in this world. He is longing for just one desolate moment of freedom. It is as if he was in our very own conscious. His emerald green eyes have grown weary with age. Once they were used to envision endless landscapes of room to roam free. Now all they see are thousands of bars. Endless, relentless, bars. We also may experience life different than we envisioned it when we were young, wild and
At one point there is a display of wild animals of all colors and varieties in the nursery. There is also a scene where card tables and snacks come out from the walls. The house reads a poem to the mother, the house does so much that the actual mother has time to stop and listen to poetry, it even has her favorite poem memorized which is an interesting one about the effects of war and its consequences. It even uses rhymes to remind the family of the time and also other things that our going on. To a child and even to an adult these rhymes make for a more entertaining atmosphere than a simple command Entertainment plays a large role in the daily lives of people, when everything is accomplished with the day and all task are completed, entertainment is what people turn to. Since the house completes the tasks, there is more time for entertainment. This is also provided by the house, which shows how important the house is to these people, all aspects of their lives seem to be go through their technological caregiver and
The story, Have You Seen Marie, is about Sandra Cisneros who suffered from depression after her mother’s death. Her doctor encouraged the author to take antidepressants, but she resisted taking medication. Her friend came to visit her and while there lost her cat, Marie. The act of trying to find her friend’s cat forced Cisneros out of the house and into the
The stories that I read this week each produced something different within me as I was reading. "Samuel" by Grace Paley made me think of what I did as a child that may have evoked some feelings from others that they wished to call me. The writer used vivid language to describe the children that were playing and the adults that were concerned and irritated with them. One could imagine themselves being right there with them. "The boys are jiggling on the swaying platform" and "Two men watched the boys jumping and jiggling on the platform..." are two examples that make the reader feel like they are right there. With the various ways that each person around the boys responds to their horseplay, it also shows how people respond in the manner that they do. Some choose to respond and others simply glare at them hoping they would cease their behavior.
In general, the writer is trying to explain how a brief look of a weasel made her think more deeply about life. And that life is not as complicated as we think of it and live it. Life is composed of all these beautiful and painful moments that we are missing while trying to achieve a goal, to make more money, or while we are reviving memories of past or are daydreaming about the future. As we are trapped by our avarice, weasels live their life freely by following their
They voyage and transformation shows how the world if different than it may appear. The theme of the difficulties of growing up demonstrate Annemarie's confusion as she does not know where she belongs. Finally the bravery and courage this all takes and how this courage or bravery can be the buffer between life and death. Moreover, Annemarie journey is different from the rest of the stories told and her determination to overcome her fear just makes her story a little more
The story resonates with me because it is a very interesting story about young women who marry primarily for status and how their parents are involved in their relationships. It also explains how the ideas of pride
Almost everyone goes through something tough in their lives. It is always nice to have someone there for you when money issues, family issues or any other problems happen. In the movie A Street Cat Named Bob, that someone is a cat. This is based off of a true story where Bob helps turn a man named James life around.
