Veterinary Nursing Personal Statement

Veterinary nursing is a course that is always developing due to advances in technology, and offers a career that has so much to learn in a practical environment. I think I will gain a sense of fulfilment from relieving the suffering of animals, as it is incredible to think that animals can go home with a good quality of life due to your hard work. I have gained several weeks of experience which have allowed me to grow my basic knowledge of animal welfare, which I hope to develop further.

My compassion for animals continued to grow during three weeks of experience at Veterinary practices and hospitals, where I observed animals from diagnosis to surgeries and aftercare, this demonstrated how nurses assist surgeons by monitoring patients’ health through medical procedures. This experience demonstrated the dependence animals have on humans, the important part a veterinary nurse plays in society, as well as the ethics in animal welfare.

During my 6 days in a kennel and cattery, I improved my efficiency as I was partially responsible for preparing certain wards, I believe this skill will help me during this course as nurses will need this trait when monitoring the health of multiple animals. I also learnt the value of excellent observation skills as the staff noticed small changes in the animals’ behaviour and catered for this.

My week volunteering at the RSPCA helped me to gain a better understanding of how to treat animals when in distress or in trauma, and how you should treat them differently to make them feel safe and comfortable.
