There have been different significant meanings about the Venus of Willendorf, which is fertility, good luck, and a mother goddess. The Venus of Willendorf statue was found at Willendorf, Austria in 1908. It is 4 3/8 inches and made between 28,000-25,000 B.C.E. It was made from limestone with a tint of red orchard. It has an abstract body of a nude woman with enlarged parts. She has little hand that overlap over the breast, and appear to have no feet. There is no face on the head, but it appears to be a cap or maybe curls on the head. The female statue has exaggerated stomach, breasts, and bottoms. It also shows a very sharp, detailed private. During these times, hunters would go on these long hunting missions. The statue could have been a lucky charm for success. With its 4-inch size, it was small enough to carry in the hands. Archeologist believed that hunters carrying around would bring them success. The prehistoric art is said to be a mother goddess by archeologist. Venus of Willendorf gets its name from the Roman goddess of love and beauty “Venus”, and its area of discover, because it was looked upon as beauty (Zygmont). Venus the Roman goddess also represented sex and fertility, she was looked upon highly to the the people of Rome and referred to as the mother, which is the same title people gave Venus of Willendorf. Women that resembled Venus of Willendorf was looked upon as success, during that time. Venus of Willendorf is a very popular Paleolithic art. The artist made the sculpture to represent what was going on during those times. I also think it gives off a representation of power for women, and being a strong woman. Fertility is one of the most powerful things about a woman and I also think that it could possibly signify confidence. That is why she could be made in the nude as well.
