Vengeance In The Odyssey

The Odyssey has many themes in it. You can make an argument for the theme being hospitality, loyalty, perseverance, vengeance, appearance vs reality, and spiritual growth. These are all great themes for the Odyssey, some better than others, but the theme that is the best is vengeance. Vengeance is a great theme because it happens many times throughout the story. The lesson to be learned from the theme, vengeance, is to respect other things and people or they will come back to haunt you.
This was demonstrated in the Odyssey quite a few times. Once was when the Cyclops killed and ate several of Ulysses’ men and held them captive. Eventually though Ulysses and his men managed to escape and got vengeance when they stabbed the Cyclops

in the eye which blinded him.
Another time was when the suitors disrespected and harassed his wife Penelope. They also disrespected his home, tried to kill his son Telemachus, and picked on Ulysses when he was disguised as a beggar. Telemachus and Ulysses got vengeance on the suitors though when the two of them brutally slaughtered all of the suitors. Those are two examples of times when vengeance happened in the story and how a character or characters got back at the other character.
As I said earlier there are many other themes that are also used many times and are important to the Odyssey. One of these themes is hospitality. Hospitality is another important theme in the Odyssey and might even be considered to be the most important theme to other people and is also demonstrated in the Odyssey multiple times. However it is not the better theme because vengeance just simply sends a better message. You could say that the theme for hospitality is to respect others homes while the theme for vengeance is to respect other people and things or it will come back to haunt you.
In conclusion I have presented to you which theme is the most important in the Odyssey and gave you a couple of examples of the theme happening in the story. The two examples was when the Cyclops held Ulysses and his men captive and killed several of Ulysses’ men. Ulysses and his men got revenge though and blinded the Cyclops. The second example I used was when the suitors disrespected Ulysses in many ways until he and his son slaughtered them all. I also said that hospitality is also another important theme in the story and stated why vengeance was a better and more important theme than hospitality which was that vengeance had a better message to send.
