The Evolution of Veganism
In America, 97.5% of the population grows up living a half carnivore, half herbivore based diet. This is how I have eaten my entire life, along with the rest of my family. Drew Carey once said, “The easiest diet is, you know, eat vegetables, eat fresh food. Just a really sensible healthy diet like you read about all the time.” Even though a great amount of Americans live with this type of diet, there are many who have switched to a high-carb, low fat, plant-based diet, other wise known as the vegan diet. Natalie Portman, a well-known actress, has been a vegetarian since she was young, and after reading the book Eating Animals, she became a vegan activist. In society today, the appeal of becoming vegan is growing past the small group of people it once was. In a newsletter from Food Navigator U.S.A, Elizabeth Crawford explains that way back when, most vegans would only avoid eating and wearing animal products for ethical reasons. It now includes consumers who seek healthier, cleaner foods and/or care deeply about animal rights. Many people now prefer alternative dairy products and also use meat substitutes when buying or cooking their food. The population of people who are now claiming to eat less meat is also growing, which makes the opportunity for animal-free products larger. This also helps the hearts of the animal lovers who seek to improve the lifespan of animals that are often killed for food. Over this past summer, I was having problems with my skin and after doing some research I came to find that eliminating fat and oils from your diet helps improve the condition of your skin. I attempted to switch to an all vegan diet in order to try and improve my skin. However, after about a month and a half of witnessing the difficulties of making the shift to veganism, my body forced me to return to my normal
