The Vaquita is a species of porpoise. Its name means “little cow” in Spanish. Of the several porpoise species that are out there it is actually the smallest. They grow to the size of four to five feet and weigh up to 120 pounds. This rare porpoise species that is fairly unknown to most of the world human population is also the most endangered marine mammal out there and is latterly on the verge of extinction. These porpoises desperately require the human species assistance in order to rebuild its population. Without the support and dedication from researchers, scientists, and the general human population the Vaquita population will diminish uncontrollably. Scientists are uncertain as to the actual length of time the Vaquita has been on this planet, however it was first discovered back in 1958 (World Wildlife). The oldest known Vaquita was a female that was found was around 21 years old (Defenders of Wildlife). The Vaquitas tend to forage near lagoons. Researchers have found 17 different fish species in their stomachs that were classified as demersal and/or benthic species. These fish species are found known to have a habitat in relatively shallow water near the upper portion of the Gulf of California which assisted the Vaquita’s with having a stable diet. According to Researchers, the Vaquita have also been found to be non-selective feeders on small fish and squid in this area. Some of their most common prey has included teleosts fish such as grunts, croakers, and sea trout. Similar to other cetaceans, vaquitas may use echolocation to find their prey. Once named the friendliest city in the world, Puerto Vallarta in my eyes continues to carry that reputation. The people who live there are what make this place so special; it is my most desired place to travel to. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico sits along the coast of Banderas Bay in the Pacific Ocean. Along with having exotic scenery, they are known for having an exceptional variety of food. With the dark frigid winter creeping up on us, my head wanders to memories of missed friends and 90 degree temperatures.

The gray whale is a migratory species that spends the majority of its summers feeding in the Arctic Ocean near Alaska. Every winter thousands of gray whales, many of them pregnant, leave the hostile waters of Alaska and travel 4000 miles to the warm and salty lagoons of Mexico’s Baja California Coast. They cluster around 3 primary lagoons in which they stay until late April, however only one of them remains unmarred by human activity. This last remaining refuge, Laguna San Ignacio, is now in great danger of becoming invaded by the corporate world. The high salinity of the waters provide many benefits for the whales. Because of this high salt content, the whales become much more buoyant and expend much less energy remaining afloat. This proves to be very beneficial for the newborn calves that are just learning to swim and nurse. Another benefit the lagoons of Baja California possess is the warm water temperature in comparison to the chilly waters of the Arctic. This warmth provides heat to the newborns and prevents excessive losses of body temperature, thereby conserving energy that would otherwise be required to maintain a constant body temperature. Also, the seclusion of the lagoons from the dangers of the open seas, such as high waves created by storms, makes it a safer place for the newborn calves, as mother and child are less likely to become separated. These benefits substantially increase the survival rates of newborns as well as provide a more comfortable nursing environment. In 1943 the quintuplets left the only home they ever knew of “Quintland.” This year after a nine year battle their parents Oliva and Elzrie Dionne recovered custody of the quintuplets. On December 28, 1943 Dr. Allan Dafoe officially signed an agreement releasing himself as one of the quintuplet’s guardians. In the girls nine years at “Quintland” their parents had become infrequent visitors and were made unwelcome at the facility. Tiburcio Vasquez was Born in Monterey in 1835. He was descended from one of earliest settlers of California. His great-grandfather arrived in California as a young man with the DeAnza expedition of 1776. His criminal career began in 1852, at 17 when he attended a local fandango with his older cousin, Anastacio Garcia. When a fight broke out, Constable William Hardmount was killed. Even though they weren’t directly involved in the killing they still fled the scene. Jose Higuera, one of Vasquez’s friends who was at the fight didn’t flee and was hanged by vigilantes the next day. While hiding in the hills with his cousin he picked up the “outlaw business”. He joined a gang of other desperados, and eventually became the leader of his own group.

Valeria has two older siblings, Guillermo and Celeste and a younger brother named Alan. Araminta was born a slave in 1820 in Dorchester county, Maryland, America to Ben Ross and Modesty Harriet Green. Ever since a young age, Araminta was forced to work. She was first hired at the young age of 5 to take care on an infant. Her job was to watch the infant at night and make sure the child made no noise so the mother could sleep. At any time if the child made a noise, her master would whip her around the neck. This was just the first of many jobs and masters. Throughout the years, she worked at various different tasks, some including maid, nurse, wood cutter and cook until she was old enough to work in the fields. Long-term survival of a species depends on its ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions (Murphy, 1994). Genetic diversity within a species, which has taken 3.5 billion years to evolve, makes adaptations to these changing environments possible. Unfortunately, the rate of extinction of genetically diverse organisms is rapidly increasing, thus reducing this needed biodiversity, largely due to the human impacts of development and expansion. What was an average of one extinction per year before is now one extinction per hour and extinct species numbers are expected to reach approximately one million by the year 2000 (WWW site, Bio 65). As a result governmental and societal action must be taken immediately!
With a coastline of over 202 000 km and over a fourth of the world’s freshwater resources, it is no wonder why Canada’s fishing industry is a huge part of its economy.1 Canada exports more than 75% of its fish to over 130 countries worldwide. Many of the 7 million people who reside on the coast depend on the ocean’s resources. In total, Canada’s entire fishing industry is worth around 5$ billion dollars a year, being one of the world’s most valuable. However, the coasts have not been treated by respect; overfishing, over consumption, and wasteful practices has deteriorated, not only the industry, but the ecosystems and fish populations. This is a huge global issue; the worldwide collapse of fisheries has been project for 2048. Slowly, as the trends continue, we will inevitably see many fish species start to disappear. In fact, the ill-treatment of species on the Canadian border has already devastated a large specie, the cod.
Background Vasco Da Gama was a highly respected and successful Portuguese sailor. His name is synonymous with the European Age of Exploration. Vasco Da Gama is perhaps well-known for his efforts in establishing Portugal as a major colonial empire. He is most famous for being the first person to sail directly from Europe to India (Biography.com, 2015; BBC, 2014; Szalay, 2013). His philosophy is perhaps embodied in the statement “I am not afraid of the darkness”, which signifies the courage with which he undertook his expeditions.
If Australia leads the way to making stricter rules to save the lives of these majestic creatures, the variety of species can recover. Overall the humpback whale has moved from 'vulnerable' to 'least concern' on the IUCN Red List, a list of the worlds species facing the highest risk of extinction. This means that overall humpback whales are less likely to become extinct which is a level needed for all whales. This is a great recovery however it is not enough to restore the marine balance in the oceans. We need at act NOW, in order to safeguard the futures of our worlds whales.
