John Updike's use of descriptive diction, along with his fantastic example of hyperbole in Sammie's (he spelled the main character's name wrong) deep observation of his surroundings forms a well crafted story that envelops the reader in thought on the tough subjects of being a social hero and how far is it worth it in A&P. The use of description lets the readers know how important this fading moment in Sammy's (spelled it right this time??) life. It illustrates that even after the event happening, Sammy recalls all of what has taken place during the event. This is evidenced by the fact that he remembers so much of what conspired that day.
