With major instability left behind in Europe after World War 1 followed by a Great Depression, this cleared a dangerous path for another conflict, World War II which would prove even more catastrophic. With an economical and politically struggling Germany, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi’s rearmed their nation and aligned with Japan and Italy to assist in his plans for world domination. Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany, and World War II had begun (history.com, 2009 pg.1). With all this occurring the United States remained neutral in the conflict for the beginning of the war.
The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, 360 Japanese aircraft attacked the U.S. naval base in Hawaii, taking America by surprise and killing more than 2,300 troops. This attack brought unity for the American public in favor of entering World War II, and on December 8 Congress declared war on Japan, Germany then declared war against the US in response. This a couple years later lead to the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan killing 120,000 people and soon thereafter lead to the Japanese surrendering in September 1945. Countless more were injured, and even more lost their homes and property in the war. Lessoned learned would be that the US should not waited as long to intervene in a conflict when genocide of a civilization is being waged. Even in a great depression we could have done some bomb runs to cripple Nazi strongholds and possible saved countless lives of Jewish and Americans. Today the US is more proactive in eliminating terrorist waging war on people of certain religious or cultural beliefs, though I feel more improvements could be
