“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” This quote is by Booker T. Washington. In the book “Up from Slavery” Mr. Washington was a poor African American man who wanted an education. He was able to peruse an education, through hard work and perseverance. Then he wanted to help others also receive an education, by building a school. Everyone believes that Mr. Washington pursued helping others to get an education by building a school. Washington should have pursued helping others to get an education by building a school is because it would help people work together. During this time of the school being built there was segregation between races, and Mr. Washington helped both races work together to build this school. Also he would have the chance of both races to work together to raise money for the school to be built. Then he would be able to have both White and blacks to work together to retrieve, build, and fund for supplies for the school. Some people believe that Mr. Washington should not have pursued helping others to get an education by building a school because Mr. Washington had no money. Mr. Washington would have to go into debt if he wanted to build the school. This reason is easily refutable because in the book he had the help of others to fund the school. Another reason why some people believe that Mr. Washington should not have pursued helping others to get an education by building a school because he was a black man and no one would want to help fund for school roughed by a black man.
