Many times, when we see a person for the first time, we automatically judge them, whether we realize it or not. In Pride and Prejudice, this is exactly the situation between the two main characters. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have very different families, lifestyles, and attitudes. They both formulated their opinions of each other rather quickly and this really hindered the beginning of their relationship. In our lives this happens many times as we judge first without even getting to know the person. Luckily for Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, even though they despised each other, time eventually changed their minds and hearts, resulting in an unimaginable love story.
Elizabeth Bennett is no push over and definitely has a mind of her own. She is an intelligent woman who holds nothing back. In many situations this can be a positive or negative choice. In this book, it really seems to be both, when it comes to Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth can also be described as her dad’s favorite and the second child of the Bennett family. Her family was a very interesting group of people. They were different from each other in their own very unique way. Mr. Bennett was pretty relaxed and a lot of times tried to stay out of all the drama that was happening. It also appeared that even though he was much different from the rest of the family, he liked taunting his wife and girls. He especially did this when it came to situations that seemed really important to the females. Overall, he was very caring and loving towards Elizabeth and just wanted to make sure she was making the right choices. Mrs. Bennett was definitely not the smartest one of the family. We can learn from this book that we shouldn’t judge people from our first impression of them. This is a fact in real life and Pride and Prejudice shows a very clear example of the reason not too. If Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy would have stayed with their first impressions then this chance of true love would have never happened. It was easy to just be on Elizabeth’s side and see Mr. Darcy as a worthless jerk. Even though there were reasons that he acted like that, it was not excusable, but he really truly had a great heart. Although Elizabeth did not see it at first, she truly opened her heart to him in the end, and made this book a true love story.

Darcy is prejudiced towards Elizabeth because he believes that she should be flattered that he has proposed to Elizabeth, being of a. lower class than he is. On the other hand, Elizabeth is prejudiced. towards Darcy, because she judges him on first impressions and on what. she hears about him, he says. I think that this pride and this prejudice that both characters pose, only causing them to be distant from each other.
Darcy’s proposals help to manifest his personal growth by showing the difference in his manner, rationale, and result. His haughty words and actions are the crux of his indifference towards the feelings of others in the beginning of the novel. Although Mr. Darcy is ignorant of his own highfalutin attitude at first, the rejection of his proposal by Elizabeth is just the tocsin he needs to salvage the small amount of respect she still had for him. Through her rejection, he comes to terms with his own pride and prejudice against Elizabeth and her family. Also, he realizes that she is not one to marry for money or social status, but she wants to marry a man that she truly loves, which is a surprise to him. This radical modification of his attitude results in a second marriage proposal for Elizabeth, where he genuinely expresses his feelings. Although he is uncertain of her answer, he simply wants to make his love for her known. The slightly astonished Elizabeth immediately recognizes how much the tone and motive in his second proposal have changed from his first and also reveals her love for him. In Pride and Prejudice, the main female character Elizabeth is shown to have extreme pride towards the main male character Darcy. This is because in their first meeting Elizabeth's pride is wounded by Darcy as he says She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me, and I am in no humour to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.' This thoughtless and proud comment causes Elizabeth to take an instant dislike to Darcy. It also clouds her judgement of Darcy's true nature.
Even after he fell in love with her and proposed to Elizabeth, he completely debased her family. Darcy realized eventually that he was going to have to change. He tried to look at his behavior. and analyze why he acted as he did. In the end, he fought his intense pride so that he and Elizabeth could be happy together.
Darcy, the illusion that Mr. Wickham had built surrounding himself was now shattered: “How different did everything appear in which he was concerned.” Elizabeth now realizes her mistakes, which her prejudice was built and hopefully will never fall for such deceit again. Mr. Darcy is not the only one who is haughty, Elizabeth’s pride takes a massive blow after reading the letter, “she grew absolutely ashamed.” Realizing her mistakes will make Elizabeth grow as a person as she realizes how despicable she was, and has learned from her mistakes. Elizabeth had always thought she had the perfect judgement, but in fact she was horribly blind: “Till this moment I never knew myself.” Elizabeth now sees that she has flaws and it got in the way of her judgement rendering it blind. It is in maturity that people see their flaws; now Elizabeth has to make sure the same mistakes does not happen again. It was only after her prejudice of Mr. Darcy was finally gone that Elizabeth realized her true feelings towards him: “She explained what it’s [the letter] effect on her had been, and how gradually all her former prejudice has been removed.” After reading the letter, Elizabeth was able to realize her flaws as a character and grow into maturity and because of that she was able to see her true feelings about Mr.
Considering his actions as ill-intentioned caused Elizabeth to completely dismiss the growing love and emotion that he had for her, nearly derailing the prospects of a relationship as well as the security of her future. After all, Darcy would’ve been the perfect suitor for Elizabeth: he is wealthy and able to provide for her given that she has no stake in her own family’s wealth, and his similar wit and charm would ensure that she remains content with possibly sharing the rest of her life with him. Had Elizabeth not have been so blunt in her reason for rejecting Darcy, they would’ve parted ways forever and she would’ve been hitched to someone less intelligent and humorous than she is by her marriage-zealous mother, causing Elizabeth’s unhappiness. Truth needs not to be beholden to one’s idealisms and ideology because it is fundamentally objective; there is only one “truth” and trying to mold it to fit your narrative or worldview would simply result in deluding yourself and negatively impacting yourself. She emphasizes that marriages can only be successful if they are founded on mutual love. Elizabeth and Darcy 's relationship is really different from all the others in the novel. Elizabeth does not care about him being super rich and he does not find her the most beautiful. At the beginning, he thinks she is “tolerable”. They do not like each other at the beginning, they argue a lot and are really sassy towards each other. They are the opposite of amiable. Their relationship is far beyond just physical attraction. Darcy secretly helps out with Lydia 's situation. He does not want Elizabeth to be hurt nor does he want her family to ruin their repuation. He helps Elizabeth and does not bring it up, let alone brag about it. Love is not boastful. This shows the reader how contrasting Darcy and Collins ' characters are. “Elizabeth 's heart did whisper, that he had done it for her...” She has a feeling that Darcy is the one who helped out but she is not one hundred percent sure. The reader is first acquainted with Mr. Darcy's arrogance at the Meryton Ball. Speaking of Elizabeth Bennet, he so snobbishly says that she was, " tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me" (Austen 9). His feelings of superiority to the people of the town lend Mr. Darcy to be judged as a man with a repulsive and cruel personality. The women, who had found him dashingly attractive at first glance, deemed him a man unworthy of marriage because he offered no positive qualities other than wealth. Not only did Darcy refuse to dance with Elizabeth, but he makes it clear that no woman in the room was worthy or met his standards of a suitable partner stating that, " there is not another woman in this room, whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with" (Austen 8). In the beginning of the novel, Mr. Darcy is only concerned with the wealth and social standing of the people in the town. Throughout the early 1800s, British women often played a subordinate role in society, flexed by many obligations, laws, and the superior males. A young woman’s struggle for independence and free will can often be compared to a life of servitude and slavery. Women were often controlled by the various men in their lives; whether it be father, brother or the eventual husband. Marriage during this time was often a gamble; one can either be in it for the right reasons such as love or for the wrong reasons such as advancing social status. In 19th century Britain, laws were enacted to further suppress women that eventually bore the idea that women were supposed to do two things: marry and have children. In Pride and Prejudice, Austen demonstrates a women’s struggle within a society that stresses the importance of marriage and strict behavioral customs. As evidenced by the Bennett daughters: Elizabeth, Jane and Lydia, as well as Charlotte Collins, marriage for young women was a pursuit that dominated their lives.
Throughout Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy is a grave symbol of pride. He notes on how his societal ranking is too high above Elizabeth’s for it to be rational to marry her, while proposing to her for the first time. In a letter to Elizabeth, Darcy also notes how the Bennet family’s improper manners and actions negatively influence the perception of their family and undermine the acceptable traits and actions of Elizabeth and Jane. Darcy’s feelings towards Lizzie begin to change at the second ball, and again when she visits Jane at Netherfield. It is almost as if the hatred has sparked an interest, one that turns to love. Due to social norms, Darcy believes he cannot be with Elizabeth. He refers to it as a “handicap,” she does not belong to the aristocratic class of society and wealth as to which Darcy belongs. This social pressure puts a strain on the possible relationship. Despite this obstacle, the two continue to get to know one another. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy both go through dramatic changes in their attitude towards each other. Darcy is devoted to Elizabeth, but denies it because of her family and her lower status. Elizabeth believes Darcy to be arrogant and interfering. Through conversations these characters have, their true regard for each other is discovered. Austen effectively uses dialogue to develop the change in the principal characters’ moral temperament, and also to advance significant concerns in the novel such as marriage and wealth-based status.
Comparing and contrasting darcys and Elizabeth are relevant to relationships now. Now just like people now and back then, many people get into relationships for many of the wrong reasons. One reason is for the possibilities of gain from the other person’s money and/or wealth. Darcy realized that her family was money hungry. Today many families have become estranged due to money issues and complications. Darcy has pride in his character or morals and has a prejudice for the Bennet’s and their money. Now people do the same things for money, rather than choosing to live happy and stable lifestyles. Another comparison is having the ability to tell the truth or being deceitful. Furthermore, Darcy’s actions and opinions towards Elizabeth Bennet serve to exemplify his prejudice. While his claims of loving her certainly hold true as the novel draws to a close, his earlier behavior leaves much to be desired. His first opinions of Elizabeth show his contempt for her social standing, describing her as “tolerable” and claiming he had no intentions of “[giving] consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.” (11; Vol. I ch.3)
Austen's view of true love is clearly evident in the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Bennet is an unfailingly attractive character, but what everybody notices about her is her spirited wit and good sense. She has a keen, critical mind when expressing her opinions and is unwilling to believe only the best of everyone. It is this intelligence that brings Mr. Darcy's admiration of her and her sense that she can rely on both mind and heart. Darcy carries the persona of a snobbish, arrogant, and self-assured man who assumes that he can get everything he wants. He explains his attitude by stating, " I was spoiled by my parents, who though good themselves … allowed, encouraged, almost taught me to be selfish and overbearing."
