University Jazz Concert

On Monday, October 3, 2016 I was privileged to attend the fabulous performance by the Pittsburg State University Jazz Band at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts in Pittsburg Kansas. It was a beautiful evening filled with fantastic music. The concert featured many well-rehearsed songs, talented solos, and enjoyable evening for everyone who attended. The evening opened with a nice pieced titled, Time After Time. The song opened with a guitar solo performed by Tyler Jones from Baxter Springs, Kansas. This particular piece had great dynamic contrast as it started out quiet and then gradually got louder. The song also featured a miraculous trumpet solo by Justin Crossman from Leavenworth Kansas. This piece was filled with improvisation and you could feel the creativity following from the musicians. The combo didn’t have a conductor like the big band and was significantly smaller. Although, the combo was smaller and less formal it wasn’t any less of a performance. The piece started out with a phenomenal alto sax solo by Kevin Clements of Lamar, Missouri. Kevin is a talented musician, with his dark, rich sounding solo, he hit it out of the park. Ivan Vazquez of Garden City, Kansas performed another great solo on the trombone. I loved the concert because the songs were lively and energetic. The improvisation was really nice and gave the audience a feel for the creativity expressed through jazz music. My favorite part of the evening was the solos by Justin Crossman and Tyler Jones singing Summertime. They are both remarkable musicians and knew how to spark up the concert. I would highly recommend attending a jazz concert by the PSU Jazz Band or any jazz band if you are given the opportunity. Attending a jazz concert lends the opportunity to experiencing jazz in a new way. The Pittsburg State University Jazz Band has come along since the rehearsal I attended a few prior to the concert. At the rehearsal the band lacked togetherness and were not as precise as they were at the concert last Monday evening. At the concert they were more confident and spiced up the music with their dynamics and accents. I am very grateful for the opportunity to watch these two bands perform.
