Universal Themes Hidden in To Kill a Mockingbird
Imagine what it is like to defend a black man during the 1930s, during the time where racism is a huge problem, but deep in your heart you know that it is the right thing to do. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, show the life during the 1930s through a 6-year old girl’s perspective. The story takes place in Southern Alabama, during the time of the Great Depression and other major conflicts. Living in a town, Maycomb, Jean Louise is also known as Scout, experience racism, poverty, and other problems that Maycomb suffer from. Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, is a very well known lawyer in Maycomb, he stands up and accepted to defend Tom Robinson, a humble and kind black man that have been …show more content…

Atticus risk his own life and his children to do what he believe is right. “In ones and twos, men got out of the cars. Shadows became substance as lights revealed solid shapes moving toward the jail door. Atticus remained where he was” (Lee, 202). Atticus knows that it is not right that Tom Robinson is charged for a crime that he have not done because of that he have decided to defend this black man. However, by doing so, he is putting his life and his children’s in danger, the racist people in Maycomb will loathe them and harm them. This quote show that Atticus have sacrifice his life by waiting at the jailhouse, knowing that the angry mob will hurt him if he tries to save Tom’s life. Atticus know this and instead of running away, he stay there waiting for them. Boo Radley have also sacrifice his life for Scout’s and Jem’s. “The man was walking with the staccato steps of someone carrying a load too heavy for him. He was going around the corner. He was carrying Jem” (Lee, 352). Boo Radley have come out of his house to save Jem and Scout lives. He have killed Bob Ewell for protecting the children. Putting his life in danger, Boo Radley was willing to save Jem and Scout no matter what. This display the love and sacrifice theme, Boo Radley who never leave his house, have do so to save Jem and Scout lives.
