All students are different, from the way they think and process information to the way they learn. In Design and Deliver, there is quote from a 5th grade teacher Kandice Castillo (Nelson, 2013, p. 14), “Make sure you realize that you cannot teach one way and expect everyone to get it or assign an assignment and expect everyone to do it the same way. Just like in staff meetings. Some people take notes and other can remember the information by just listening. There are different ways that you grasp information. Representation is giving learners different ways to acquire information and knowledge. Action and expression is giving the learner different ways to demonstrate what they know. Engagement is tapping in to different learning interests and challenging them appropriately while motivating them to learn. All three components work together to make learning possible for all students. “Ideally, a curriculum should be able to be modified or customized to meet the needs of both teacher and student.” (Orkwis, R & McLane, K. 1998)
UDL is a best practice. It simply is “great teaching with intent”. It is building choices for students, providing them with the experience and freedom to understand and choose what will work best for them. UDL is daunting, and the more I read about it, it is overwhelming. This biggest barrier is that you must develop dynamic teaching to meet the needs of the learners in your classroom, but your leaners are different every year.
