The global health challenge discussed in this week’s readings is unintentional injuries. Unintentional injuries is one of the leading cause of deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYS) worldwide. In addition, unintentional injuries is almost twice as those who died of lung cancer or HIV/AIDS. Unintentional injuries are “that subset of injuries for which there is no evidence of predetermined intent.” The unintentional injuries usually comes from road injury, poisoning, falls, fires, and drowning. In 2010, low and middle income suffer road injury. Drowning, fires, and falls had the same amount of death. Poisoning is only half of the amount of death from drowning, fires, and fall. Chasing Zero is a documentary which was meant to both educate the viewer on the prevalence of medical harm as well as to enlighten both the public and health care providers on the preventability of these events (Discovery, 2010). The documentary expounded on the fact each year more people die each year from a preventable medical error than die due to breast cancer, motor vehicle accidents or AIDS (Institute of Medicine, 1999). Medical harm can result from adverse drug events, surgical injuries, wrong-site surgery, suicides, restraint-related injuries, falls, burns, pressure ulcers and mistaken patient identities (Institute of Medicine, 1999). Incidences of medical error have been reported in the media for many years. The most startling revelation in the documentary is how common medical errors are and how preventable they are.
Ben Roethlisberger, commonly known as Big Ben is a quarterback player of Pittsburgh Steelers who suffered a Lisfranc injury in a game. He was carted off because of his serious foot injury that will compromise his mobility and scramble ability.
Throughout Rajiv Joseph’s play, Gruesome Playground Injuries, the two characters, Doug and Kayleen, sporadically meet throughout the course of 30 years due to injuries ranging from getting “beaten up pretty badly” (Joseph 31) to going into a “coma” (Joseph 27). The play starts out with the two characters first meeting in the school nurse’s office with injuries of their own. This is the start of a relationship that is full of pain and healing throughout the years. Told in a very unique structure of five year increments, the play shows how injuries, a reoccurring image that may be self-inflicted or inflicted upon one, bring the pair together when either is in a dire situation.

Potholes, wheel ruts, and positive guidance are elements of poor road conditions that have the possibility to cause car accidents. “Rhode Island has the second highest vehicle repair in the nation paying over $661 a year.” (DeQuattro, 2014) The large population of impaired streets in Rhode Island has contributed to residents having to pay over $661 annually in car repair. Road Trauma, is a hidden tragedy of the road, we have become acclimatised and relatively numb to catching an idea of the devastatingly high loss of life. Crash fatalities are turning into an expanding condition and an undesirable occurrence for today’s youths. Research has been conducted in the United Kingdom on the prevalence of chest trauma. From January 1998 to January 2003; the findings presented the information, “Over the six-year period, out of 25,467 trauma patients admitted in our institution there were 1,164 (five percent) patients with at least one chest injury” (Veysi, 2009). Out of those 1,164 patients with at least one chest injury, fifty-seven percent of the those patients sustained the injury due to some form of mechanical vehicle accident (Veysi, 2009). “From the fifty-seven percent of patients, nineteen percent were pedestrians, seventeen percent were drivers of a motor vehicle, and nine percent were motorcyclists” (Veysi, 2009). The majority of cases where a patient receives some form of thoracic trauma are due to vehicle accidents, meaning they were preventable in one way or another. A case study was developed to measure national incidence, medical costs, and productivity losses of medically treated injuries using the most recent data available in the United States. The authors of this case study combined several data to estimate the incidence of fatal and non-fatal injuries in 2000. The results of this case study were surprising. More than 50 million Americans experienced a medically treated injury in 2000, resulting in lifetime costs of $406 billion; $80 billion for medical treatment and $326 billion for lost productivity (Corso, Finkelstein, Miller, Fiebelkorn, Zaloshnja, 2015). Head injuries are very serious and dangerous. Some head injuries can cause neurological brain damage. They are commonly found in the sports world, putting athletes at risk. There are a lot of head injuries that are dangerous or could cause serious damage brain and in turn, the body. Because of this, precautions, rules, and guidelines need to be in place to prevent and treat these athletes. If these things are not put in place, it could mean the difference between life and death for these athletes. There are many different injuries that can occur to the head and face.
