An officer from Grapeland Texas has ended his law enforcement career do to an unethical act at a party. “The officer allowed a female subject at the party to wear his duty rig with his weapon, taser and ammunition on the gun belt (Chuck Franklin, 2013).” Shortly after the event pictures were uploaded online. A women (name not given) had a beer in her hand and which clearly showed herself with an officer belt on. Chief Franklin fired the officer after getting a quite few phone calls on June 26 2013. The behavior the officer displayed was very unprofessional and unacceptable. Most importantly it was unsafe. What could go wrong with an intoxicated women and a gun on her waist? A lot. Anyone who misuse their firearms are putting other people’s lives at risk. This is unethical especially because it is an officer. It is important to talk about how serious situations like this are so other officers don’t make the same mistake. So what can we do to stop unethical behavior in law enforcement? As a start better psychological tests and background checks. Another way would be to hold the police officer accountable for their mistakes and punish them for it. It is important to know from the start how well an officer will do in the long run. Sometimes bad decisions are caused from being mad or just from simply having a bad day. Ethical decisions are essential in any situation. It is a responsibility as an officer to know of ethical behavior. All officers are held at a higher authority and is to protect and serve us. Does unethical behavior affect law enforcement image to the public eye? Of course, it weakens the amount of trust we have with police officers in general. Police officers are always placed in an ethical situation. It is significant to make society feel safe.
