On the country side of Scotland, where the war with England is raging, lives a young family. Here the family lives and grows, independent of society. “Are you going to help me make breakfast this morning?” asked Uncle Stewart. Since his wife died, he cooked for the Stewart family, he was a complete stranger they hired more out of pity than anything else. One month into cooking for the family, he had adopted the name ‘Uncle Stewart’ due to his kindness. “Not today I believe, it’s too early” replied Maddie. Maddie is Matthew and Madeline Stewart’s oldest child. “Too early? That is a lazy excuse.” Said Uncle Stewart. “At least I have an excuse” retorted Maddie, she was already half-asleep. “Thank you for everything that you have done.” Replied Madeline. Johnny left the bush house and returned to Matthew and Uncle Stewart. “Mother, what shall we do now?” Asked young William. “We shall go out and play in the woods! It will be loads of fun!” Chimed Bruce. “No. The only things you all will be doing is sitting in this house and enjoy each other’s company.” Said Madeline. “Won’t be hard for me,” said Maddie, “I have got Goldie!” “Well then let’s all play with her now! Where is she anyways?” Asked Bruce. “She is right her-“ she stopped “Mom where is she! I thought I brought her! How could I have forgotten her? I must go back to get her!” “Maddie you will stay in this house and wait it out. Anyways even if the English come, what would they want with a small brute?” Asked Madeline. “I don’t know and I am not going to find out. I am going back right now to get her!” Said Maddie worried for the only friend she could remember having. Goldie had always been there for her. She never had a real human friend, only this dog. But she was so much more than a dog! She was family. She was the only way Maddie got through the day. The only person she could talk to. Granted, Goldie probably couldn’t understand what Maddie said, but it was nice for Maddie to get everything off her chest by telling Goldie. She must go get her dog! She had to get her dog. When the travelers were ordered out of the cart, the townspeople started throwing rotten food at them. Covered in rotten food, the band of Scotts arrived at the tower. “C’mon now! We don’t have all day!” Said the warden. They were escorted up the stairs and to their cells. Johnny was to share a cell with Uncle Stewart, while Matthew and Maddie had separate cells. “I love you Maddie. Whatever happens, just know that I love you very much.” Said Matthew as he departed from Maddie’s cell. “I love you too father!” Maddie yelled, hoping for her voice to find her father in the darkness. She heard no reply. Her cell was miserable. She could hear the rats squeaking, as if announcing their presence. “Oh my God!” The voice came from the stairs Maddie had went up. “That same stair! There is no use in this stair! Cut it off and make it the same height as every other stair is what I say! Is the King trying to kill us? If I ever meet the king, I will be sure to tell him about this. What do you say Tuck?” It came from the same voice, getting nearer and nearer every syllable. Then came a sound of a bird squawking. After a few seconds, a boy with a raven on his shoulder climbed the last step and stepped into the light. The boy had black hair and was quite short. “Hello Missy! My name is Forrest and this here is my pet Raven, Tuck.” Said the boy, “I brought you your dinner.” He walked toward Maddie’s cell
