Recommended: Problems with racism in literature

In numerous way a character in an book can be affected or influenced by their culture in the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand a young man by the name of Louie Zamperini is affected at an early age by his culture. While reading the novel an individual would find out that Louie is the son of two Italian immigrants, few years after Louie was born he moves to this small surber city called Torrance with his family. While living in this town Louie family has to fight against prejudices of the citizen not wanting this Italian family living in the neighborhood. In the first few chapter someone would learn that in the 1920s Torrance ,California was very prejudices to the Zamperini family by trying to get the city council members from letting them move into the city.Meanwhile, Louie Italian heritage did have a small effect on him as he was becoming an adult. …show more content…

The impact of being an Italian descent impact on his life was when Louie was younger him and his family had moved from New York to Torrance, California where he would soon experience his first taste of prejudice that some people can show to others. After the move when Louie was in school he knew very little english while he was in kindergarten as Louie move up a grade he was caught in class for not knowing english which cause Louie to be bully for sometime in his childhood. But later on as he had gotten older Louie learn to fight so he could defend himself better against those who had bully.     In the novel, “Unbroken,” by Laura Hildenbrand, Louis Zamperini struggles to overcome many challenges during WWII. Zamperini was a troubled child. He completely disregarded authority and had a difficult time controlling his temper. His brother, Pete, wanted to keep him out of trouble, so he distracted him with running. Louis fell in love with the sport. After having a successful career as an athlete and joining the olympics, Zamperini, was drafted into the Air force. Along with the challenges brought by war, Zamperini faced unusual circumstances as his plane had mechanical issues and crashed near Oahu. Of the eleven men aboard the plane, three survived and were stranded at sea for forty seven days. Zamperini was one of them. After being stranded, he was picked up by the Japanese navy and taken to a prisoner of war camp where he was tortured. He was held there until the end of the war. The events in Zamperini’s childhood led him to become a courageous and fearless adult. His drive, commitment, hope, and resolve kept him alive and thriving through each of these situations.
