UNICEF I had the immense pleasure of completing a summer internship with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the amazing city of Kingston, Jamaica. UNICEF is a leading humanitarian and development agency, working globally for the rights of every child, with specific focus on safety and shelter, nutrition, protection from disaster, conflict and changing the life cycle: pre-natal care, clean water and sanitation, health care and education (UNICEF, 2016). UNICEF also lobbies and partners with government, leaders and policy makers to help all children realize their rights (UNICEF, 2016). Throughout the summer, I worked hand and hand with the amazing UNICEF staff and partners to not only collect, analyze and distribute pertinent data, but also to survey and assess the current needs of the community and the target population. This was successfully completed through data review, in depth interview and focus group. Using tis s information along with the help of my amazing supervisor, Novia Condell, I was able to successfully complete inception reports for the partnering organization of Children First. The results showed that there was significant need to address HIV/AIDS within the adolescent homosexual community as well as socioeconomic factors within this key population. Thus, a new yet sustainable three-month program for the youth and adolescent MSM community within the Kingston and surrounding areas was created. A needs assessment and focus group was created and analyzed in order to ensure program efficiency and success. With the help of the Children First staff, a comprehensive and interactive intervention program was created to address not only HIV/AIDS and adolescent health, but also life skills, physical wellness, spiritual wellness and occupational …show more content…

They are as follows: MPH 1. Apply design and analytical methods to describe, implement, evaluate, and interpret research addressing public health concerns: I addressing this competency by utilizing health behavior theories to implement new and evaluate current public health programs and initiatives within UNICEF in addition to collecting the necessary behavioral data through in depth interviews, focus groups as well as primary research to in order to assisting the partnering organizations in achieving maximum efficiency and sustainability. MPH 5. Design public health programs, policies, and interventions for implementation and evaluation: I addressed this competency by assisting in the implementation, collection and evaluation of a pilot program for the organization in additional to collecting demographic and qualitative program information to evaluate and assess the organization’s current programs and initiatives. MPH 7. Identify public health concerns in diverse cultures and communities: I addressed this competency by identifying public health concerns among the Kingston communities through the education and implementation of community health specific programs in addition to assisting with the internal evaluation of existing and new community programs and initiatives.
