How has globalization affected indigenous people? In Mexico, the Tzotzil people have had their daily lives affected by globalization. The Tzotzil are among a Mayan group located in Chiapas whose population is around 300,000. The Tzotzil have a distinct language known as tzeltal, a unique social organization and a system of production adapted to their ecosystem. Tzotzil people are small farmers, live in a patriarchal system and they have an oral tradition with myths and stories about their beliefs and culture.. Tourism is a leading activity in Mexico and a good source of revenue but for the Tzotzil people, they haven’t entirely benefited from increased tourism in their region. tremendously. Native Americans during the time of the early settlers where discriminated against and still are today. At the arrival of the Europeans there was an estimated one million to eighteen million Native Americans (meaning living above Mexico) in population. There is also said there was about three hundred languages spoken at the time. Anthropologists have tried to summarize “the cultural practices and reduce the cultural complexity and they have come with twelve major cultural areas. But, material artifacts and mode of subsistence give a geographical area rather than on social organization or a people’s way of life, including their family relationship.” ( Mindel, 1998, p.382) The similar family structures can be traced in almost every Native American family from their basic family structure to marriage rituals. Europeans introduce disease to the Native Americans. The introduction nearly killed the total population. Diseases like the small pox, measles, chickenpox, influenza, and many other help to the extinction of almost half of the languages known today. When Europeans settle in the Native American land the quickly tried to acculturate them by taking their land, fighting them for land, and later using reservations to almost incarcerate them for the outside world because the did not want to live like the white man. Native Americans did not like the way they were being treated. Every generation that passes, there would be fewer and fewer Native Americans around the Americas. The Native Americans saw what the Europeans were doing to their land, they wanted their old way of life, and they wanted the Europeans to leave.
Lisa Lowe’s introduction on the word “globalization” was interesting as it reminded me of the readings and lectures regarding colonization of the United States. Globalization is described conditions that increased economic, social, and political interdependence among people. The article allows for comparisons to be made with eighteenth century America. For example, the arrival of English colonists led to a change in the North American landscape. This could also be described as an invasion of native land as colonists felt the land belonged to them. Similarly, Globalization also mentions American invasion in the context of the conflicts against Afghanistan and Iraq. Globalization is more than the mere transfer of goods and the contacts between countries but it’s also the transfer of a culture. To what extent did historical globalization affect people’s lives? In our Canadian society we support cultural diversity,there are more than 50 aboriginal languages spoken in Canada. However there is a very small amount of people that actually speak aboriginal because of the cultural genocide the First Nations faced when the Europeans arrived in the 15th century.This launched a series of cultural contacts between them. They assimilated the aboriginals in hope to gain power using residential schools,treaties and strict rules.The Europeans were imperial to the Aboriginals. The aboriginals lost their collective identity and meaning of life. The Beothuk was completely wiped out, their people and even their culture was was lost.
In Chiapas, there are 0.3 hospital beds per 1000 Chiapas residents, however, there are 7 hotel beds for every 1000 tourists(CITE, 26). With the government not trusting the people with loans, many of the people have made their own small businesses in order to make a few pesos off of these tourists, an example of this are children in Guadalajara charging tourists 5-25 pesos to have their picture taken with an “authentic Mexican,” to give the tourist a more authentic Mexican feeling (CITE SECONDARY). It is disheartening to see these people who live in a land so full of resources and opportunity, having to live in such impoverished conditions, and having to cater to wealthy tourists in order to make their stay more comfortable and happier for just a few pesos to bring back to their broken down shed where they live. This capitalist approach that prioritizes wealthy tourists over the indigenous people who inhabit the land also has a large effect on the education and healthcare of these rural people. While there are lavish hotels for the tourists, the towns people have a broken down shack that serves as a multi-purpose community center for them as a church, meeting room, school, and adding to that, the education system only goes up to grade 3, and teachers are

When the Europeans first arrived in Latin America, they didn’t realize the immensity of their actions. As history has proven, the Europeans have imposed many things on the Latin American territory have had a long, devastating effect on the indigenous people. In the centuries after 1492, Europeans would control much of South America and impose a foreign culture upon the already established civilizations that existed before their arrival. These imposed ideas left the continent weak and resulted in the loss of culture, the dependence on European countries, and a long standing ethnic tension between natives and settlers which is evident even to this day. The indigenous people of South America, which included the Aztec, Olmec, and the Maya cultures of Central America and the Inca of South America, had developed complex civilizations, which made use of calendars, mathematics, writing, astronomy, the arts, and architecture. Unfortunately for them, the Europeans cared little about the culture they would be obliterating, and cared more about their own ulterior motives.

Globalization has an impact on my lifestyle because I am currently surrounded by technology and different cultural food. With globalization I have access to different foods that i would normally never get to try, also technology has allowed me to gain knowledge about different culture I would normally not know, this results in me being more informed and benefited because of globalization bringing the different culture of the world so much closer

In Illegal People, U.S corn farmers sold their corn to Mexico, causing Mexican corn farmers to severely lose profit since American farmers were selling their corn way cheaper. An example of how globalization is seen on Sleep Dealer is how an American company privatized water in Memo’s rancho. By privatizing the water, the company sold quantities of water at unreasonable prices, leading Memo’s dad to struggle to maintain his corm field. (Harris 5-23) The main cause of globalization is influence from other, more developed, countries. Globalization is a historical process that results from human innovation and technological progress. The social effects of globalization are clearly illustrated in Peru. Once a third-world country filled with poverty and oppression, Peru is now transitioning into a developed nation. Globalization is a term which became popular after the 3th quarter of the 20th century. It is used to describe the movement of people, information, commodities and financial tools across national borders which increase the interconnection between countries economically, politically, socially and culturally. The effects of globalisation on different fields are one of the main discussion topics of these days. One can easily find thousands of articles on the impacts of globalisation on economy, agriculture, politics, democracy, science and even on climate. However, globalisation and its effects on culture is an unheeded area. The defenders of globalisation consciously avoid discussing culture, because they all know that globalisation is the main source of cultural genocide.
Located in the southeastern section of Mexico, right along the Pacific Ocean, lies the diverse Mexican state of Oaxaca. Due to the “sixteen ethno linguistic groups [that were able to] maintain their individual languages, customs and ancestral traditions” (Schmal), Oaxaca is by far one of them most ethically complex states in Mexico. In fact, Oaxaca is heavily dominated by the Zapotec and Mixtec people, which are the two largest groups in Oaxaca. However, globalization has recently impacted the greater city of Oaxaca and its inhabitants more than ever. Western goods, services, ideas, values and media have impacted areas all around the world and Oaxaca, Mexico has seen its effects first handed. Globalization has deeply impacted small communities within Oaxaca; cities have been deserted, families have been relocated, and economical distress has been experienced. If globalization did not have a direct impact on communities within Oaxaca, local communities would have been able to thrive, local businesses would flourish, and economic hardships would have been decreased. Without globalization, the citizens of Oaxaca, Mexico could have stayed in their homelands and gathered wealth to invest back in their community, schools, and other facilities.
(Bilton et al 1996:5) The process of globalization has certainly had many changing effects to the world we live in; it has also changed the way many factors operate. Globalization is said "to have transformed the structure and scale of human relationships that social, cultural, political, and economic processes now operate at a global scale with a consequent reduction in the significance of other geographical scales. "(The Dictionary of human geography 2004:315) Globalization has had both positive and negative effects on a local, national, international and global level. Globalization often brings benefits at one level which cause negative effects at another, these results and the scale at which they manifest are often uncertain and unpredictable.
Globalization has taken over the role of shaping the ethnic-Mexican culture. Globalization is the force that is establishing the divides of conflict and contradiction. As Globalization began to show more of its negative effects on those lives of the individuals in developing countries, it became more evident that because of this globalization people on every continent and territory were exposed to and forced to consume a North American culture.
