How has globalization affected indigenous people? In Mexico, the Tzotzil people have had their daily lives affected by globalization. The Tzotzil are among a Mayan group located in Chiapas whose population is around 300,000. The Tzotzil have a distinct language known as tzeltal, a unique social organization and a system of production adapted to their ecosystem. Tzotzil people are small farmers, live in a patriarchal system and they have an oral tradition with myths and stories about their beliefs and culture.. Tourism is a leading activity in Mexico and a good source of revenue but for the Tzotzil people, they haven’t entirely benefited from increased tourism in their region.
